There is a lot here about the K1 which I suppose should really be on the K1 thread although it is linked to the bad knee issue.
I guess there are loads of people out there with knee problems who still want to go dinghy sailing. And that is where I think there is a market for something like the K1 or even better still a boat with more form stability like the Phantom and with a lifting keel to prevent those nasty capsizes. It would need to have a thwart across it to enable old crocks with bad knees (like me) to sit on when going down wind in the light stuff.
That is where the Albacore scores as it is always a comfortable boat to sit in with the crew balancing to leeward.

Mirror dinghy might be worth looking at too, if the knees are really, really bad!
Mind you, pulling boats up the slipway seems to give me more aches and pains than the sailing a lot of the time.

How about an OK? Small, but deep cockpit and no straight leg hiking.

So if I get a boat with a deeper cockpit then I will be doing bent leg hiking - which is actually worse for the knees than straight leg? Or is bent leg hiking in a deep cockpit dinghy better than bent leg hiking in a Laser? |

Bent let hiking in a deep boat is better than bent leg in a Laser, but any hiking is pretty bad for the knees, depending upon what is wrong with them in the 1st place.

So I have already been down that track. The Dr reckoned I should hit the gym to strengthen muscles that will support the knee. I also wanted to train for straight leg hiking so I thought that will kill two birds with one stone. But unfortunately it made the knee hurt more. Maybe I was trying too hard I like the Laser for it's convenience and flexibility but I'm not going to be competitive unless I can straight leg hike for a few minutes at a time, and I don't think this is going to happen
Yes - I am one of those with winter membership, but I don't know if I have met you yet. Look out for Radial 72628

What is actually wrong with your knee? There are surgical remedies short of total knee replacements which have worked well for many.

Well I have been getting slight pain for years which I though I better get sorted out due to me returning to dinghy sailing last year. I got a physio appointment (over the phone!) and she reckoned I had pronation (flat feet) and knee cap problems. It is not directly caused by sailing but as you can see it effects it. It is minor and doesn't warrant an operation, but I don't want to aggravate it |

Straight leg hiking is always better than bent, see Steve Cockerills excellent article on the Rooster website.
One of the main causes of knee pain in dinghy sailors is soreness/inflamation of the cartilage on the inner surface of the kneecap. This is mainly caused by the kneecap being pulled back hard against the end of the femur (thighbone) when either hiking with bent legs or when taking weight on the knee joint with the legs bent (kneeling or squatting). If you have more serious knee problems ie injury to the structural ligaments of the knee (cruciate or colateral) or injury to the cartilage menisci inside the knee then you need specialist advice as things like twisting on your knees with the knees flexed may be very harmful.
The ideal is a boat which allows you to sit on your bottom in light winds or off the wind, taking your body weight on your bum not your legs, and which also allows you to hike straight legged. All deep cockpit boats will allow you to hike straight legged if you have the toestraps loose enough. If your thigh muscles aren't up to straight leg hiking then get them fitter (gym and cycling good for this).
I've been sailing a Solo for 3-4 years and not had any knee problems because of the above (I'm 50). Now purchased an RS300 and not sure how the knees will tolerate kneeling downwind! Although they'll probably helped by the exercise from the regular swimming!

I feel for you as I have been through similar although telephone physio is a new one on me. Having had both knees done in the early eighties, I knew what was causing the pain when it started again last year after stupidly playing table tennis. Eventually I convinced my doctor to refer me and things moved on pretty quickly once I got to someone who recognised the problem. Modern knee surgery is good particularly if done by arthroscopy. Be wary of total knee cap replacements as they have not got them off to such a fine art as hip replacements.
I am now looking forward to a few more seasons of dinghy sailing before my body fully retires me.
To put things in perspective there is a guy at our club who has only one arm and one leg. He is amazing and gets into the boat and throws his wooden leg to somebody on the shore with the instructions to put it into the cannon. He then sails off in his modified skiff type boat along with crew.
Now I kidd you not that is true and he is a real example that if you want to do something enough, you will find a way of doing it. His wooden leg is just for getting him from the changing room to the boat, he does have a proper prosthetic and no he does not have a parrot.
