Unfortunately I arrived late so was a spectator rather than a competitor. It was interesting to watch but I got rather confused. Were quite a few boats late for their starts? It certainly looked that way - unless they were going terribly slowly!

Launching is the only major problem there doesn't seem to be a solution to. The only one I can think of is to launch in flights and use the tannoy to communicate this. People who miss their slot could join in a "latecomers" slipway.
Might work, might not. Requires co-operation.
On the other hand when you get 29ers and 49ers pushing late coming fireflies and N12 out of the way you do wonder about the levelof common sense being used.

I remember sailing at QM many years ago and thinking the launching was tricky - and was surprised to see it isn't any better now. Would it be possible to build slipways in front of the clubhouse or way too expensive?

Having queued and only just got to the start in previous years and knowing I had a novice helm I encouraged him to launch early on the leeward side of the bund and sail round. gave us a shake down before the start and no panic. Lots of people were happy to let us through as they werent ready yet. Last thing I wanted was to try to launch under pressure from lots of others trying to make the start.
Not meaning to sound smug just remembered how busy the launch was and wanted to get away without hassle

I suspect all the clubs at the older artificial reservoirs where they have no "built in" launching facilities have conversations about this regularly. I'm not privy to the QM discussions but suspect that the very big breakers you get in front of the clubhouse in a south westerly must be a factor... Edited by JimC - 09 Jan 11 at 8:50pm |

I think that is a very good idea indeed.
Having sailed at QM for as many years as I can remember, I supposed I am used to the launching, but the wind direction was just a little bit away from the norm, typical really just so that approx 200 visitors go away with the "bad launching" thought in their head.
More often than not (wind depending of course) you can launch either side of the "bund", so it really isnt a problem.
It "usually" takes approx 10 mins to sail around the bund, so I was trying to tell people to launch early to clear a space. (Lots of people standing by their boats having a chat, thinking all was well, when they should have been launching ) How are visitors supposed to know?
Maybe a megaphone would have worked better, anyway LOTS of people were late for their start time.
On the whole though I thought it was very very well run.
