Hey guys,

I haven't been around for some time (thanks to a 4 month break for a shoulder operation) so I thought I'd try to get back involved with a few blog posts.  I wrote one on downwind tactics what seems like years ago, so this is a bit of a follow up post, looking at what crews can do to make the helm's life a bit easier:

http://bit.ly/cMIdxL

If you have any other ideas that I could add to it, please let me know.  I'm writing one from the helm's perspective later this week, so any feedback on that would also be very useful!

I hope this can help a few people out, or at least get some conversation going.

Ryan

Make his life easier? Why on earth would I want to do that? On the b14, he's only got one rope to pull most of the time, and a stick that he should be trying not to waggle too much, how much easier does he want it? LOL

I know it only to well myself, the crew has to filter out a lot of cr*p from the helm. When it gets too much mine gives me a verbal warning signal:  "Shut up and drive!"

Now what could be fairer than that?!?!? LOL
Pass the skiff, man!

when crewing 505 I normally had lightweight helms (under 10 stone) and me being 15 stone plus and over 6ft mentioned shouting at me could get them hurt.
I once caught my FD helm on the chin with my elbow whilst tacking, nearly knocked him out, we gained 5 places on the next beat so abuse sometimes works!
Now I shout at myself.

Thanks for the feedback, well, some of it.. :)

Maybe I should make an ammend that says "a few things, such as damn well turning up and bringing your kit, should be seen as a given..".

And yes helms do need the extra help. That one bit of rope they have to hold on to can get complicated.. :P

Crew's job: Sort the campsite and the meals, pay the entry fee and fill in the paperwork.
Read the SI's and know the course  - well, have some idea where the start is!
Try to get him there on time (before Rogerd starts teasing!)
Complain when he starts cursing and swearing at the top batten.
Give him a big hug when you've finished and
make sure he buys the beer Hug

Very very rare but it has been known once or twice!

Yes he is good at buying the beer though.
