I am moving into central london (Shoreditch) in the next couple of
months and am wondering if anyone has any idea about friendly clubs with decent racing that won't take me hours to get to. I am looking to buy a Laser and race it on weekends. The catch is I won't have a car so will be reliant upon public transport to get there... Anybody got any suggestions? King George looks reasonable with a 20 minute train from liverpool street to ponders end railway station and then a 10-15 minute bus ride. Wembley sailing club looks possible too but a bit further. Any other suggestions? Any racing in the docklands? Edited by Reach4thestars |

When you get to London try to get to the club before you make your choice. meet the members & take your sailing bag with you, because lugging your wet bag around London on the tube & bus service to get home may well make the decision for you.

It all depends on what you want and what boats you want to sail. I have been to all of the below so am able to comment:
London Corinthian (Hammersmith) has a lively Laser fleet, it is tidal so you can only sail at certain times. Interesting launching but really friendly lot there. King Geoge - large resevoir, fantastic sailing, different range of boats sailed there. The club is building up its members again after Thames Water shut it a few years ago for maintainance. Docklands - Sailing centre is only for teaching. and the Royal Victoria Docks is also the same, teaching only, no racing. Most definately worth a visit to both to see how long it would take you and which is best for you. The LC club does a few social events, worth knowing to keep the interest going. |
