If the forum wasn`t pretty easy going & was modarated in a heavy handed manner,The chances are that you wouldn`t have been able to post the poll in the first place. So I am quite happy as it is.

Forum moderation is a nightmare. I think Mark and Mags have it spot on.

I have no complaints and think that self / peer moderation is the best (and hardest) to maintain

SA exists for those who are prepared with deal with a rough crowd (and personally I am but under a screen name). There is no point in Y&Y acting as an SA clone - it has to do something different to survive. GRF seems to moan about the SA moderation and moan about the less than rapturous reception he gets on SA. Can't have it both ways.
As for SA being in decline: the dinghy section is weak but for keelboats of all description, the quality of information available is way above and beyond what can be found here. Provided you can deal with the bullsh*t and the lunatic fringe, there are some very acute observations from designers, top sailors and leading administrators in the sport - none of which exists here, at least as far as keelboats are concerned. FWIW i think it is essential that you can be rude to other
people and hurt their feelings if you feel that they deserve it. How do you marry that without it becoming stupid? |

Totally agree with Roger for 2 reasons. 1. The forum is viewable to all without registering. 2. Children are able to register as contributors. Just because SA has some foul mouthed lunatics doesn't mean Y&Y have to allow them. And at the end of the day Y&Y provide the forum and can set the rules as they like. |

That's an interesting perception Stefan. Yes I moan about moderation, coming from the old school that believe in freedom of speech and views and not mollycoddling the weak minded who cannot learn to ignore what offends them. The banning of Doug Lord has for example turned out to be hypocritical and detrimental to that forum imv. As for the alleged 'concern' I might have about my own 'reception' I'd suggest that is more an indicator of your own insecurities. There is, or should be no concern about a 'persona' on an internet forum, if one feels that insecure, then become anonymous - simples. They are purely a recreational medium for information and socialising on a wider scale than one might normally achieve. One would think from your position that they might be regarded in some far more serious light. I post on any number of forums in a variety of hobby/sport interests ranging from kites to bikes, and this forum is by far the most anal and coincidently sparsely populated, it has a distinct lack of ribald humour that one would come to expect elsewhere in webworld for instance and a lack of new characters to enage with. That's as it may be, to take my own advice, one can take it or leave it and it appears most do, given the numbers of participants in sailing over the numbers that participate here that is clearly the result when you compare against other minority sports. The 'spat' that took place yesterday was absolutely trivial from the brief glimpse I got of it, and it could have developed into an entertaining mid day diversion. Something we all seek from places like this as an escape from the drudgery of day to day existence between sailing or whatever the interest of the particular group that forums develop around. But no, not to be, moderator says no. Of course you all wouldn't know that, because its been censored, like quite a lot of entertaining stuff that we may have no idea about because its also been censored. It's a pity - oh and you're a dick Stephan, just thought I'd add that - so you can get this post censored if you like. Edited by G.R.F. |
