Y'all wear them because you're told to..
Even on a piping hot day in flat calm stooging around an Iso nationals some snot nosed Hitler youth comes up in a rib and tells us to put it back on when we'd taken it off, strung it up whilst we drifted about. Foxtrot Oscar was the immediate response. It's classic Dinghy Nazi-ism, don't wear your buoyancy vest and we'll disqualify you nah nah na nah na. Childish nonesense. BV's physically hamper you, they tire you out, they bulk you up and slow you down, if you can swim anything like half decent you'll do it twice as well without the vest. Bouyancy? You're wearing a frigging wetsuit ffs there's buoyancy a plenty therein. Get knocked out? Half the BV's y'all are wearing aint gonna save you. Get trapped under the boat, exactly how easy is it to dive down out and under with a bloody buoyancy vest on, and trust me after thirty years of messing about in all manner of boats, boards and whatever I ain't still here because of the help of a bloody buoyancy vest, quite the contrary I can think of any number of times I've been in a pickle and survived precisely because I wasn't wearing one. I'll never wear a proper EC approved vest voluntarily, I count them as potential death traps. That's my view. Crash vests? That's another opinion, they have some relevance in certain circumstances, have always worn an Impact vest of some description if speeds get quite high, I.E waterski racing, kitesurfing and speed windsurfing. I was left in the water for about 10 mins, safety boat nowhere in sight (professional safety boats as well). Rescued eventually by another sailor, I would probably still be there if it wasn't for this friendly Dutch guy........glad I had a BA on. I would probably have been OK without but glad at the time.

it's not really like a bike helmet is it.
When / if you fall off a bike you are likely to receive serious injury / death without a helmet. When you capsize a dinghy you get wet. To be safe you need to wear a Life Jacket as a BA won't keep your face out of the water and you will drown if knocked out. All they do is provide extra buoyancy when in the water but the trap hazard and lack of mobility, increased tiredness ( on board, getting back in and swimming ) starts to negate the marginal benefit of being able to float about and chat to the rescue boat from the water. You have a boat that provides enough buoyancy for that. Edit: I should add that I prefer a trap harness with a small amount of buoyant material in the back. My problem with BA's is less with providing buoyancy but the size and amount stipulated ( 50N ). This makes the device to bulky and starts to erode the benefits of the device. what no one has mentioned is _
that if you are wearing a wetsuit you will float anyway. probably also in a drysuit too.
it doesn't take much to make someone float , most folks almost do naturally . I take exception to wearing extra bouyancy when i will float anyway , the xtra bouyancy as pointed out is only an EXTRA potential danger in getting trapped. If I die getting trapped under a boat because of rule enforced BA wearing I hope my wife can sue ISAF
In my long ago youf I attempted swimming under 3 canoes wearing only a wetsuit , I nearly drowned as the bouyancy of wetsuit alone trapped me under the canoes .
praps we should wear lead weights

is it beyond the wit of man to be able to design a super slim BA?? Not sure i agree with the whole matcho thing. Lets be fair we all look like idiots in our rubber lederhosens and crap rubber boots anyway.
