Single handed trapeze...I'd sail double handed but I find
that single give me a more open timetable with a young family and I can easily sack of sailing when the wind is pitiful! |

There is a major problem with the Polling software you can just revote again and again!! meaning the whole thing is pointless!

Yes, I'd allowed the multiple for those that do both.
You can disable mutliple votes. I put it up there in mid phone conversation with Mike from Alto who was mourning the apparent demise of single trap sailing, and there does seem to be a trend toward single handers, certainly that I have noticed in the relatively brief time I've been around. There have been relatively few really successful twin handed boats launched and commercially succeeded, but lots of single handers or so it seems. But the real joy of sailing I still think is double handed, especially if the decision making process is shared. Edited by G.R.F. |

Good topic. There's been a big swing towards single handed sailing at my club in recent years, probably 70% of boats now Single Handed Hiking (pond too small for traps). If I recall correctly I'd guess it used to be the other way around (ie 70% doublehanders) 15-20 years back.

It does seem to be on the wane.I've given it some thought but reached no conclusions........thoughts like: Majority of Cats are 2 handed. Not on the wane there? Husband and wife teams can be frought with problems but when they do work they work well. Does the RYA 1&2 focus too much on single handers. Is the crew position too boring in an assy, less teamwork dependant. My wife thinks she would be less important on an assy. Less commitment to a team needed on an assy Youth of today more self centered, less able to tolerate differences of opinion, more likely to get a divorce / more likely to split as a team. ........No conclusions |

........afterthought. Cadet training at our club seems to be done exclusively in Toppers. Looking at old club photos (1950s) the boat of choice seemed to be the Cadet, in fact looking again there doesn't seem to be any single handers? ...anything in that?? Edited by GK.LaserII |

My old man used to reckon that too many singlehanders at a club killed the club. I think this was based upon the thinking that you lose a lot of social interaction, but also you lose a way of introducing newbies to the sport. Becoming a crew was a cheap and effective way of learning to sail, that can't happen in singlehanders. But then again, there are more sailing schools, activity centres and club holidays than there used to be, so may be we are learning to sail in different ways. Singlehanded sailing is becoming more popular - perhaps because singlehanders are cheaper and you don't have crew hassles. Also, crews don't get the reognition they deserve, so its not a glamorous role. Modern, affordable boats for a couple of fellas weighing in at 170-180kg are few and far between. Also, modern singlehanders like the MPS and RS100 offer performance that was previously only obtainable in two man boats. That said, there will always be a place for two man boats - it is a lot more fun and a lot of people don't have the confidence to helm. When RS first marketed the 400 they made a big play of it not having trapezes. Classes like the Fireball had obtained a reputation for needing very specific physical attributes - a featherwight helm and tall crew - to get the best righting moment for an all up weight. LDC repeatedly pushed the point that the 400, as a hiking class, allowed sailors of different sizes to sail together more competitively. The ISO and L4000 (which were launched shortly before the 400) carried weight as a form of crew equalisation, but no-one likes carrying ballast in their boat. So LDC really highlighted this weakness and there was a sudden 'realisation' that single trapeze boats were' unfair' and undesirable. And they've not really recovered since (the FBs doing okay, but as a genre the single trapeze boats have lost out). |

Double handed sailing is great. I sailed with the same friend for years. We laughed, argued and swam together, but the time just came last year when it seemed the right time to split. We now race against each other.....but I do miss the rows. Double handers are dying out in our club. It is a shame but it is just so much more convienient.
