Hi everyone,

I am currently finishing off my A-Level Design Technology
coursework for which I have designed, developed and
manufactured a prototype hiking bench.

The main idea of the bench was to provide the ability to
replicate the hiking experience of a number of different
dinghies. This was done through an adjustable toe strap
and a deck section that can be widened and moved forwards
or backwards.

Hopefully the link below will take you to an album on
Facebook which anyone can look at. People's thoughts
would be much appreciated relating to the concept of the
design, its aesthetics, adjustability and anything else
you can think of.

What about IP protection? Get at least u.k. design protection on the thing
and a registered trade mark. Otherwise youŽll get someone else making
money on the thing.

I tried James's hiking bench at the weekend.........I was very impressed, it feels a bit more solid than the aluminum versions and the adjustments to it's proportions and size of 'deck' makes it capable of simulating various classes of boat,

I want one !

Depends how you register it and what design protection you define.

Isn't it difficult to do apply for anything now you have
put it out in the public domain.

yep.

You could have just posted the design to yourself and not opened the
envelope. This proves the date of the invention / idea and stands up in court
if you have the money / inclination to defend your design legally.

It is an A level project - maybe the aim was never to sell a million?

It would be fairly easy to retrofit a couple of 'outriggers' that slide out from the base, making the base longer but able to fold back in for storage or for sailors with, erm, less righting moment.

Bit of a sweeping statementthis , but I think:
For anyone married, the most important consideration for a hiking bench is that it quickly folds flat and can be hidden under the sofa. Unless you fake an IKEA label on it.

Looks quite professionally made. I like it. Can you drop-hike on it or does your bum hit the floor?

Cheaper version is a fitness (swiss) ball, and to stick your toes under a bit of heavy furniture!

Please can you design a version with an adjustable laptop stand on it as well. Seriously.
