I started sailing a year and a half ago, and have mainly
been sailing Fireflies and GPs, where I've been using
waterproofs rather than a wetsuit. However, I'm doing
more sailing in wetter boats (the club's Lasers and my
Europe; and whatever boat I get into next, I prefer a bit
of action to dryness...) so I find myself needing
something to keep my warm when I get properly wet. The
simple, and possibly cheapest, answer is a standard
wetsuit, but the ones I've used have felt a bit stiff and
tight; something more comfortable would be great, and a
new hi-tech toy is always more fun...
So: Any recommendations, tips or thoughts?

Thanks, Wollollo.

If you tend to sail in warmer weather just a pair of hikers and a neoprene top will do well.

If you want to add to that for warmth then a race skin and a semi-dry/aquaflece

Warmer weather? Not at all! Guess I should have said: I
sail in Norway (home) during summer, and England (uni) the
rest of the year.

It's a wetsuit or drysuit I'm afraid wollollo. The wetsuit is meant to be fairly tight so that it can retain the water against your skin and warm it up. Too loose and new (cold) water will flush through and replace the warm stuff. The other option is a drysuit which I use during the winter here in Belfast. Looser (except at the neck and wrists) but needs fleecy undergarments. Also more expensive and less durable and not the best for the summer where you will "boil-in-the-bag". Oh and it will make you look like an old man. Luckily I am an old man (40). If you are looking to sail a Laser or Europe regularly get somethin that will accept thigh battens or fit battened hikers over the top. The stiffness of a suit can be best overcome by getting to a chandlery and tryin on everything until you find something comfortable.

Are you able to get to London this weekend? The Dinghy Show is a very good opportunity to try on lots of different wetsuits to find the one for you.

Get a 5mm/3mm steamer (5mm in the body and 3mm in the arms). You can also get them with thermal linings.

I've got a Gul Response which is really cozy and fits well.

In that case I'll second a steamer wetsuit!
