Having sailed both single-handed dinghies and keelboats reasonably extensively, I beg to differ.
Sure they do. I use such winches almost every time I go sailing and it's a two-person job, one at the winch, one at the boat. Furthermore, before you can use a winch, you've got to get the boat, which can't be beached and floats in significantly deeper water than a dinghy, onto the trolley which you left somewhere above the high tide mark. Have fun with that without someone else to help. My remarks are about operating a single-handed boat as a single-hander. Of course sailors can and do help each other out but relying on that pretty much rules out sailing except at organised times when you know others will be around. That's quite a limitation. |

The K1 is designed by the same guy who designed the k6 and the rs100 and the feva, I think he previously has been quite good at finding gaps in the market.

It looks quite fun .. like having a 2nd persons weight with you but with none of the abuse you get from the fool at the front of the boat! Might have to try one ... depending on the final sale price .. |

True but unfortunately it also clouds the judgement. |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

Ex Y&Y editor Peter Milne designed the Typhoon in the '60s (?) and this was a c.16ft 2 man trapeze dinghy with a lifting keel, a little like a small Tempest. I guess modern materials will give this sort of thinking a new life where they were failed by the limited technology (& thinking?) at the time.

Crikey, kick started my cerebral random access memory. Are you sure the Typhoon had a keel. I'm pretty certain it was billed as more like a mini FD, but then twas a long long time ago [Edit] Here's some pickies.. http://bearf acemedia.co.uk/typhoon.aspx Edited by Norbert |

I think his Javelin was the mini-FD. I'm pretty sure the Typhoon had a keel but I'm willing to stand corrected by someone that is absolutely, definately positive! Had a quick Google but couldn't find anything. |

Proctor also designed the Wildfire, which used lead shot in a hollow removable keel, but that was a 2 person boat, too.
