From an organiser's point of view, a two-day event brings more revenue to the club as it usually organises a social event as well. I can see that many people want to arrive, rig, go sail and leave but there are still people who enjoy the social part of it too. Ask any Contender sailor and they'll tell you that the enduring success of the fleet is partly due to that sense of belonging you get when you talk to other sailors in the evening.

Of course, not all clubs get it right all the time and I remember a Contender open (joined with a Vortex open, I think) where the club had thought a barn dance would be a perfect social event for visitors. Well, I dunno if you've seen Contender sailors dance, but it's not a pretty sight, trust me...

That day, they all went out on a hunting-gathering foray round the local takeways/off-licence and we ended up having a great party in the boatpark where we were camping!

That's also part of sailing, to my mind.

On the vareo circuit for the season ahead i have made some amends to the system so rather than counting say four events out of five i have changed the system over to number of days to count rather than the whole weekend meaning you can go to an event for one day and it will count towards the overhaul series i am hoping this is going to work but we can only try ????

We have four two day events and only one day event which always has the best numbers so i wonder does this speak for itself !

One day opens are fine if the event is local (hour or so drive) and the boat is fairly quick to pack and unpack. If it ends up with more driving and boat packing/unpacking time than sailing time then I tend to think it's not worthwhile.
A two day open, even if it doesn't involve much more sailing, say 5 races instead of 4, at least there is a "weekend away" with a reasonable social element rather than the rushed one drink while waiting for the prizegiving.

Personally I prefer 2 dayers. If i'm going to pack the boat up and travel it would be because i want to sail somewhere other than my home club and get as much racing in as possible. However, having said that I havent travelled to any of the 300 opens for a few years now. The 300 would be more suited to the 1 dayers, but I reckon I can get as much of a thrashing at home as I can somewhere else on a Sunday so a 1 day open meeting doesnt seem to hold much point to me.

We will be looking to do more B14 opens this coming year though. For some reason double hander opens always seem more of an "event" and more fun to me....

I didn't make it to any opens this year, for all kinds of reasons, but I do think I might have stood a better chance if there had been some one dayers to go to.  All the contender meets are two days, and if it's a big drive I prefer that, but sometimes I do wish that there was local one day stuff to go to.

But also, now I'm on the other side of the coin, and given that Hunts is quite a small lake I can see that trying to fit in opens/training/club racing all into a packed club programme is tricky, so I do see why some small clubs do go for one day meets.  At the moment I am struggling to fit training courses around our open meeting calendar, and these are only one day events!
the same, but different...

For me 90 minutes max for a 1-dayer and 3 hours max for a 2-dayer..each way... from SW London I can get to most of Rutland/grafham/weymouth/hayling (easy) in those time frames for a 2 day event, any further and it would have to be a really special event...

second that, if more clubs in similar locations planned like this it would make traveller series much better attended and competed for....

Mix is good. With the 2 dayers to look forward to.

A one dayer with a 2+ hours drive each way can be knackering, especially on Sunday. But I suppose that is what work is for to recover from and pay for the sailing.

I also like the odd double header where two clubs that you may not travel all that way for a one day event, have one event on the Saturday and one on the Sunday with camping at one end or the other allowing the beer quotient to be achieved. Not always easy to organise but generally popular.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

I think 1 day events are great.

They allow a balance between family life and sailing.

The Solo circuit in Scotland runs 1 day events through the summer and it seems to work great.
