Rather than hijack an existing thread - I thought I'd start a new one.
I really like the idea of these long distance sailing events - especially when they present a variety of sailing challenges. I've always fancied doing the Sheppey race, this year a wedding prevents but my other at some stage must-do long distance races open to most are: Nore Race - not huge variety but a great place to sail. Three rivers race - because it is just bonkers and it is in lovely Norfolk. Are there any other must do long distance events (I almost listed the Lord Birkett - but it is a long way to go!)? Are there really that many long distance races anyway? |

Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

I guess there are quite a few more if you sail multihulls...

...Or you and a crew could sail the whole of the Southport 24hr, I think somebody did it last year! I'm sure you would clock up some 'distance' but you won't ever get very far.

You've missed it for this year but you can always try the THE ANGLESEY OFFSHORE DINGHY & CATAMARAN RACE http://www.redwharfbaysc.co.uk/documents/EntrantsInfoleaflet 09...FINAL1.pdf http://www.redwharfbaysc.co.uk/images/OffshorePoster2009.JPG http://www.redwharfbaysc.co.uk/information.htm

The Medway Marathon is organised by Medway Yacht Club every June, 26 miles round the medway channel markers.

I'm a member of South Windermere Sailing Club and we run the "Waterhead Race" as an open event every June. Assuming there's enough breeze that's just over 21 miles round trip - this year we had plenty and it was ace!
But if you want a bit more of a challenge, what we are hoping to do for 2010 is team up with Morecambe Sailing Club and run a two day "Bay Marathon" event. If this happens it will comprise a Saturday race across Morecambe Bay and back, then everyone will decamp to Windermere for the Waterhead on the Sunday. Each race will be an event in it's own right, but they will also form a combined event. I'm really hoping we can get this off the ground, as it will be an awesome dinghy event. |

Why don`t you put these in the Y&Y calendar ( when they are finalised ) then the rest of us would stand a better chance of attending.

There might be a possibility of The East Coast Piers Race being opened up to dinghy's this year but only the short course which is still quite a challenge. Andrew |
