To be fair, Ellen and Mike Goulding got about the same as our local Fball teams on the local news prog when the Vendee etc was on. The trouble is,1 sailing progs have a small audience, and 2, what would they show? There are so many championships and classes. If you want to get people outside the sport interested you need a focus, like the Olympics.Maybe a high profile 18ft skiff series, but they tried it with the Ultra 30's a few years back, which was good while it lasted, but it died in the end. There's loads about this on the previuos thread....

when sailing is as cheap to televise as sports such
as darts, snooker, golf, rowing, football, rugby, bowls, athletics, skiing, motorsport etc etc, we will see alot more! Unfortunately we are combining a sport with a limited audience with a costly production. Sailing requires boats and or helicopters, whereas all those listed above require no more than a cameraman to sit on his fat a*se eating crisps with no more than a high-lift platform! |

think thatīs the point that sailing is so rare in tv. thatīs also the
point in germany. there are too less poeple who watch it cause sailing
is a outsider sport here and so they think it doesnīt worth the effort.
but if things like the finish of ellen macarthur happens even we see it
in tv. rarely it was ellen macarthur who made the record, but better
than nothing!

Amazing, watching prime time national evening news in NZ one of the
main stories in the sports round up was about the restructuring of NZ Yachting following the poor performance in Athens, they went into quite a lot of detail and even mentioned the RYA and the success of the British team... no wonder everyone was so well informed about the ins and outs of the AC, and everythign else NZ connected, like the new super maxi 'Maximus'... it was the same wherever you went. Oh for coverage like that! |

You can get TV5, the French-speaking channel, with cable and satellite. It used to be free but costs a couple of quid a month now with ntl . It's a general interest channel, with a lot of news, fictions and debates - programmes from all over the francophone community: Belgium, Switzerland, Canada, West Africa, Polynesia, etc. as well as French. There are also quite a few films, repeated up to six times throughout the month. They're usually subtitled into French, which might seem like a waste of time until you try and follow the plot. Not-so-proficient French learners have told me how useful this was. If you want complete programme listings, have a look at www.tv5.org Bon courage ! |
