At 60Kgs I would of thought you are better suited for a Byte. To stop the nose dive you need to be careful to keep the kicker on and not oversheet (the same as in a Europe) when going downwind!

Firstly, there is no way a byte or europe is quicker than a laser!!! Secondly lasers are much harder to sail downwind in waves than you make out! a laser has enough power to completely submarine and come out the otherside but then you have a boat full of water and that makes you very likely to tip it in as the power comes back on! |

Woa, there skipper!! No one was claiming that either the Europe or the Byte are faster up or downwind than a Laser (the subject of the sentence is 'tack')....or for that matter that sailing a Laser fast downwind is easy. However I can catergorically state that both the Europe and the Byte are tipper and more sensitive to be planted into the back of waves than a laser. Not that doing it in a Laser is a clever plan or quick, it's just that they are both shorter, narrower on the waterline and lighter; and they both have larger cockpits (I canna change the laws of physics). As an answer to the question I prefer the byte, more simple and great performance through the wind range with that fully battened main! Light winds the byte is incredible compared to soft sailed boats and in heavy winds you just need to know how to depower it otherwise it "bites" excuse the pun there! |
