Right oh, being sensible and far from expert just someone who does what he can.
Yes Contender is okay, we have a wind gauge and my cutoff is if it's gusting over 20 knots. So what's that steady f4, creeping into a f5? The hull shape (length) and weight really helps you out for not being a twitchy mare trying to spit you out and I've now got a carbon mast & boom which has also made it a lot kinder. My sails both appear to be quite short in the leech so boom height truly isn't an issue, if you're bothered most sails are loose footed now so just have the clew raised another 50 / 75 mm. Upwind when the breeze is in I can't wind it in too tight but then the accepted technique is to sail free n fast anyway. Short leeches may lose some power which I can afford anyway and have the bonus of keeping the boom end further away from the water if things get a roll on when turning corners. One caveat, my home club where I sail the Contender is a lake, albeit a really big one and not without it's wild and hard to predict gusts and you are on sea so less forgiving but steadier breeze. Not bigging myself up in fact some might say a bottler but before I sailed I had twenty years riding horses so well practised in knowing that there's plenty out there bigger and stronger than I am, if you are nice to a Contender it'll be nice to you. |

Yes Sam you could say that, smaller rig and lighter could be a Farr 3.7.
I make no judgements, I guess though they are at the same time similar but very different, 3.7 vs 4.87 will tell quite a tale in a few areas. One thing they have in common is being the only options for reasonably accessible (some may disagree in either direction) single sail trapeze boats. Quite a contrast to the number of single sail hiking boats to choose from. BTW. Jack Sparrow. Not meant to be a hijack of you thread, simply answering a question. More power to the 3.7 I say, it looks a hoot to sail. Edited by Do Different - 19 Oct 17 at 10:25pm |

Yeah, when I was younger I always fancied a Contender but, back then, it was way out of my price range so I went windsurfing (for 30 years). Then, 10 years ago, I bought the Spice as a return to dinghies (it had to be a two hander at that time). Never regretted it for a minute but it has demonstrated that I don't spend enough time on the water (or I'm simply not brave/agile/confident/foolish enough) to get the best out of helming from the wire. Don't get me wrong, I love doing it, but I simply don't have the skill or balance to get good enough at it hence the purchase of the Blaze and Supernova which will take care of my 'serious' (but not very) racing needs. OTOH, if 3.7s were more popular and cheaper old boats were available I might just give one a go.....

Ditto in several ways SS. For windsurfing read other peoples horses and "serious" racing read two man one wire three sails. Simply doing what I can while I still can.

If you want the competitive element then why are you not in said Laser fleet? Or is the goal to have a boat fast enough over the water to feel like you are beating the Laser fleet off the line, as long as it's not responsive or tippy. |

So this is Thomas... this is his first time ever Trapeze helming. He's crewed trapeze boats a few times, but normally sailed a Laser.

Well in that case none of us would be sailing dinghies.

Sadly, there are more and more former dual handers resorting to Lasers so they litter the start line, at present they don't present that much of a problem because the EPS when it's functioning can clear them albeit slowly, my concern is the short length of the Farr will make it next to impossible.
Why don't I join them? How many times do you need to be told? The Laser is a hunk of junk, simply disgusting to sail imv and I'd rather not thanks. There are however Contenders that do most of the winning most of the time and I do fancy one, I just don't fancy getting a hernia dragging one up the beach. So the Farr wins on being dragged up the beach, it wins on being nicer to sail (even though I've never been in one it's easy to see why) what is in doubt are it's ability to sail wide angles at speed (which is I assume how it does do well when it does well) in our horrible short steep chop and how it will fare in light weather off the line in a fleet of Lasers.
