Hi, we've got a very old Topper that my daughter wants to smarten up
and start sailing.

It has a pale blue deck and this has yellowish patches on it. These appear
to be something on the surface - very intense jetwashing does remove it,
revealing a nice blue underneath, but it would take a long time to clean
the entire deck in this way.

I suspect the yellow is the remains of some old polish or maybe a lacquer
that someone's applied many years ago. Any ideas on a solvent that
would remove it? I've tried acetone but to no avail.

Cheers

Phil

Hi, thanks for the reply. I've tried detergent and it has no effect. The problem
with the jetwash is that it takes literally minutes to clear a 10p sized patch.

Cheers

try some T cut.  Old toppers are really hard to clean up though.  People have been known to paint them - maybe that's what's on yours - but it never works.

Sorry to be the voice of doom.  Maybe cut some girly flower type shapes out of pretty fablon and stick them over - then she could join pimp club!
the same, but different...

this may or may not be relevant, my old red topper started to fade so we got out the heat gun for wall paper stripping and it brings the colour back to new. it might help getting rid of the dirt too.  the heat was applied very gently and evenely like spray painting.

Thanks, I have tried that and it works a treat on the areas not covered with
the yellow residue.

Cheers

Is it a smooth surface? If so fine wet and dry followed by t-cut or farecla.

If is non slip textured, then scrubbing with a fierce cleaner like Vim is sometimes effective, but will matt the surface if it's not already.

If acetone does not work, not many solvents are likely to. Meths and petrol might be worth a try.

Swarfega?

Wallpaper steamer?-Don't go mad and distort the boat!

As they say, experiment on a small area that can be covered by stickers later!

Good luck.

Thanks for the replies. I'm guessing that the residue is the remains of some
sort of polish that's been used many years ago and time and sunlight have
caked it on. Seems that elbow grease will be the solution.
