87 CHANGES TO CLASS RULES The above is a new rule ... Do the Laser class rules allow club Si's to alter the class rules with regards to replica sails? If not does that mean that at any level a replica sail can't be used for racing? |

We get around this rule at our club by aloowing them to race as a seperate class, but with the same py number. We only handicap race so this works fine for us, I suppose if you fleet race you could rewrite your rules to say that they are a seperate class but race in the fleet with the same py?! |

If any body at your club pipes up because someone is using a replica sail chase them out with a pitchfork. Unless your earning money from it or competeing at high level who cares!! |

Whilst I agree with the sentiments now this verges into the RRS I think choosing to ignore a rule or knowingly breaking one is getting onto a very sticky wicket ...

I agree Rick, which is why our sailing instructions essentialy let the replica sails race as their our class and our committee gives them a py the same as a laser/radial. Job done no RRS are broken or ignored. With this new rule, laser/radials using replica rigs are not allowed to sail as a lasers/radials without the class associations permission with I cannot see them agreeing to. |

True, but for a multi-million dollar company to be able to dictate how and independent Sailing club is allowed to run its own races which have zero baring on anything, with the backing of a racing rules comittee the composition of which is decided well outside the visibilty of even larger sailing clubs. In principle if a club wants to vary any rule why shouldn't it, as long as it is publicised and supported by the membership in accordance with it's constitution. Actually I do appear to care...!!!
edit: where does this end some beginner not being allowed to compete as they don't have a valid measurement certificate for their 30 year old ent.... Edited by tack'ho |

I guess ISAF is taking a role where it is protecting the ISAF classes. The Laser is an ISAF class and is used at Olympic level. There are costs associated with being an ISAF class and those have to be covered in some way ... even grass roots sailing benefits from this. I was just wondering how clubs were dealing with 87 as it's not desirable to have people knowingly breaking rules.

Chris, which multi million dollar company is dictating? This is from ISAF. It has the right to make this rule as you are sailing under its rules as does every club in the World! If you came to the club last Friday you could have joined in this debate with Mr Ramsden from the RYA. The fact is ISAF are partly funded by sail plaques (and boat sales) from one design classes (and International classes) why not put a rule in to protect its revenue stream? What do the guys that make the replica sails put back into sailing? As for the Ent, simple, you can apply for a replacement certificate from class records. I think ISAF and its connect for sailing programmes do more for putting begineers into sailing than replica sails ever will.

Affordable club-level sailing. Something that's pretty important in the current climate. All this rule is likely to do is accelerate the trend to all-handicap racing at club level where, as others have pointed out, the rule doesn't apply. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Why dosn't the rule apply for h'cap racing? A PY is for a class of boat and a class is defined by a set of class rules; we may not be able to be changed due to 87. The only way round this is for the club to define a new class (the XYZ) that looks like a Laser but has a replica sail that happens to have a PY of a Laser. |
