The people writing about good experiences in this seem to have been sailing the same type of boat, rather than adding personal handicaps on top of the yardstick system. This makes sense, as the variables are a little easier to control.

That's certainly the case with our personal handicap
system at Eastbourne, it's all in Lasers, plus now a separate series for Dart 16s. We allow for PY in so far as allowing Radials and full rigs, but one of the great strengths is that it gets a lot of the club, who normally sail completely different boats, sailing against each other. And it's something extra to "normal" class and PY racing, rather than a replacement for it.

Years ago I remember sailing in a fleet (Enterprise I
think) that used this system: Everyone has a running points total for the series so far, starting at zero. You get a point for starting and a point for finishing, plus one point for every boat you beat as long as: (a) they were ahead of you on points before the race OR (b) they were no more than X points behind you I think the value of 'X' was 5 but you could adjust it I guess to suit the size of the fleet. The benefit was that it rewarded consistent turnouts and gave rapid returns to people who were able to beat boats ahead of them HTH Ian |

We have a persuit race most Sundays in the summer run over 75 minutes. It was always the same few faces winning so one series we split the fleet by experience so novices would get a head start over people just started racing and then experienced helms gave more time away. It has certainly increased the number of boats out each week and gives the newbies a chance to be with the big boys. As its a very friendly club on a small patch of water lots of advice gets passed to novices as they sail. On the whole it works very well but you do have to reduce the handicaps as people improve. Certainly it has increased the number of boats out and the confidence of new sailors. |

We have personal handicaps at Frensham (0 minutes for a novice 10 for the front of the class). We use them in class racing if the class wants to in the summer when we have 2 races per class, a couple of races are class pursuits where the gun goes every minute for 10 minutes, otherwise the handicap is applied after the finish (so the race has to be timed).
In the Laser fleet, the minor series in the summer is entirely a personal handicap and is raced either first race or last in the day - when the wind is likely to be less. The regular racers just race each other on the water as their handicaps are much the same. It does attract more novices and it does show when a novice is getiing better. If you win the series, your handicap goes up 2 places, 1 minute for the second place. The class pursuits are generally well received and as class captain I have added more. The handicaps and pursuits do give you encouragement and something to aim at as a novice. |

Burghfield use the Personal handicap pursuit for the wednesday evenings - with approx 65 to 70 boats each week. Handicap reclalculates (automatically using Sailwave) every week by seconds, providing potentially different start times for different people. Works excellently and encourages many onto the water. |

Just about every club down in Oz has personal handicaps. Many classes
(like the 16s and Sharpies) even have them at their national titles. There are various mechanisms for working out the handicaps. Some assume that the boat that finishes at a certain position over the line (sometimes 4th, sometimes 1/2 way, etc) has a handicap of 1.000, and that is the benchmark. A boat that finishes the race 10% of elapsed time earlier than the datum boat would have a back-calculated handicap of 1.100, a boat that finishes 10% later than the datum boat would have a handicap of .900. Most systems run a rolling average where the 20% (or whatever) of races where the boat sails furthest away from its average (either faster or slower) are not counted in the handicap calculations. |

try http://www.peyc.org.uk/peycwww/racing/rolling.html
The rolling handicap adjusts after every race to track your acheived handicap, in effect its a smoothing filter for your race performance. To win, you do better than yu usually do. It takes away the comfort marging for the fast guys and gives the slower folk a better chance of getting into the prizes. Its also give you a target. Mines 15 points below the PY for the boat. Look at http://peycrace.info/performtrend.php to see what folk are doing. Aardvark ( 1st in the list ) is sailing on a +4% Abs ( next on the lsit) you'll see has to keep fast to win. Its been going 14 years now and the club survey says keep it so it must be doing OK |
