He'd just got into the lead of the race and to have that happen.  What an incredible performance so far, and how cruel to have that happen.

On the Vendee report.

"The rig gave way very quickly so it was over in seconds. On the data feed you can see the wind gear stops at 49 knots and the boat speed was 30 knots."

Mike Golding goes on to say too much sail in too much wind (an unexpected squal) and bang goes the mast.

 

 

 

A couple of thoughts for us all though. 

1.  Is Mike eligible for the Garmin Speed Freaks competition - and what would his points be.

2.  How fast would he have gone in a 'proper' boat (for proper insert a well known speed demon dinghy - not wishing to name the beast)
