I recon I spent my first year of MPS ownership just blasting around with a big grin ... wan't until my second season that I actually started to think beyond just having a good sail around the bay ...

For sure. At an inland venue you can run club racing for thirty boats with three volunteers (although I'd rather have five), one of which at least doesn't need to much in the way of skills. To provide a coaching session for thirty boats that's of real value you need more people and they need better skills. As those people are rarer and probably want to go sailing too if they are volunteers then you need to be paying at least some of them. |

I don't race very often, blasting is just too much fun and we got pretty damn good at it!

with andrew and myself, we spent most of lasst year practicing and not racing properly, then when we actually go and race this year the club starts moaning about the handicap of the boat because we are winning lots of races across the water....

Agreed. Sailing skiffy things most non-racing sailing is just blasting, and with these boats it's hard not to. However, (might get flamed here) racing these boats is less about tactics and more about flat out speed, corner banging and being able to hang on to it when others cannot and call the laylines right, that style of "training" does work well. In something like a Fireball, esp with a symm kite, blasting is pretty pointless and far, far more will be gained from lots and lots of back to back gybes, roll tacking your way up the pond, and practising for "what if" scenarios like an aussie drop. Trying to improve and trying out new things whilst piling into the mark with 10 other boats and helpfully asking your crew to "make this a good one" is pure folly. Knowing that you can outdrop them or outgybe them as you spent all last weekend practising it is very confidence boosting indeed! |

I'd rather just hoon around like a nutter than practise my roll tacks and 'aussie drops'. Each to their own though.... One of things I love about sailing is that it is one of the few sports where it can be done on just a leisurely basis and doesn’t have to be competitive. |

How many golfers train? People are still building driving ranges, so quite a lot. It is important to remember, 'train like you race, then race like you train.' If you get your mindset sorted for training, racing becomes easy. |

I am fitting tacking sticks/dongles. There's no way I'll be racing with those until I really have the technique sorted. Admittedly I have the luxury of time to go training, but I also have the mental attitude that allows me to do repetitive drills. I think it helps I have doen an RYA coach's course.
You can do a massive amount of self coaching (where are you Jon?) and some can even be done while you are racing, even if it only consists of a thorough self debrief after racing. I know that not doing enough light wind training, perfecting my roll tacking, probably cost me the women's title at this year's worlds and I still haven't quite finished kicking myself round the boat park for this. |

Not to mention your better half turning up at my tactics lectures for the T15 kids something you could do with now, then maybe you'd start within 15 secs of the gun going off. |

thats true, but there is more to racing than just tactics, actually being able to get the boat round the course quickly helps too, but it also goes the other way.
We can start 3 mins after the start like we have a few times and capseize 3 times and still get the 3k round the couse quicker than you, also we chicken gybe when we know we are far enough ahead in a blow. |
