That's a bit like saying "why wear seat belts as you'll still die if you crash at 200mph". Sure, stopping the boat inverting won't prevent all possibilities for death, but at least it lessons the chances from the majority, and in the majority of boats. |

Nope :) Maybe wings without webbing? But these things won't change so there's little point in trying to make it safer. i think it more comes down to having a well trained crew and rescue service.. |

Awful news. Not an 18 sailor, so simply want to add ideas here. Others will know better what works for that class. Interesting ideas suggested re-oxygen, how would the 18's would feel about requiring that an air cannister and bag be rigged inside the top of the mast - like a car airbag, perhaps with a trigger on the transom gantry. Would it add too much weight? Would it work? With my rescue coxswain's hat on, I did once prevent a Hurricane going fully over (the crew was tangled on the trampoline) by simply ramming the nose of the rib under the high hull as it came down towards the water to go turtle - always worth a shout if you have missed the top of the mast, or a decent purchase on the forestay, to pull the boat upright. Also, I do believe that knifing the shroud should be the first thing you do if there is someone endangered under the boat (assuming rescue cover, and that no other circumstances suggest otherwise). After that you can usually pick the side of the boat up and plonk it across the bows of the rescue boat...which will buy you access and time. Interested to hear if others have different views, ideas or techniques. Sad news. Clearly condolences to all. Hope that some positive can emerge from the discussion. |

I can't see how knifing the shroud would help, it would just add to the mess of ropes and stuff under an upturned hull of any dinghy. Also I think it might even make it harder to right the boat without the rig attached as the boat gets to level. That's assuming your knife will cut through 4mm of stainless steel wire, which i know mine wont.

or simply require air packets to be carried in/ on the boat side of the racks. highly doubt these will be popular with the crews though......

as previously mentioned, it takes 3 to right an 18footer. it will be impossible to right if the kites up. not only that but if you interfere in racing then the capsized boat loses any result and has to be scored at DNF. the idea of ramming the rib under a turtling boat is a good one though. in a lot of situations it takes too long to get to the boats to be able to do something like that. |

Maybe all you need to do is just accept that it might happen. These things happen so rarely it's almost not worth worrying about. Obviously you would take precautions (safety cover, carry a knife etc) but some of these suggestions are a bit OTT. If you want safety then stay at home in your padded cell, no matter what you do things like this will happen. |

If you can't carry it, don't sail it! |
