By play boat I mean a boat which wasn't tweaked to the Nth degree and very fragile, and was excellent for mid talent people to go for a blast as well as race, with simple controls. I don't mean a Laser Funboat.
The Tasar is the more tweaky pure racing boat. |

The Laser II was definitely a race boat. A little suspect at first but the highly active class association quickly got Performance to upgrade any weaknesses, problems with mast rigging, poor quality sheets, introduce optional Shute, better sail cloth for spinnaker etc...... This created a really first class one design racing machine. Still sailed actively today in a few places though no open meetings and the like. Like the Laser it is fun but hard work to sail well and the crew plays an important role so impossible once the wind gets up to just pick somebody off the beach and be competitive.
The Laser Fun was just a way for performance to move a few more hulls, a different part of the market. Simple way for people to get on the water, into sailing. The strength of the hull means that there are still many boats about and with a little attention they are ready for the water easily. Enjoy

.....and the Laser fun was not the original version. Think the Fun was developed as a play boat later, after the success of the original.

Not sure what the number is on this one as the plaque inside is very worn and faded and I’m fairly certain it’s had a new set or at least one sail replaced as they don’t match. From what I’ve seen they would normally have the same colour code not one green on orange.
All I can say is this is a laser 2 Elite fun which I believe was release the same time as the laser 2 new wave. |

Yes, it just had the chute-less deck of the original. But the original had the mast with diamonds and decent horizontal-panel sails like the Regatta, and even had a halyard lock for the jib, whereas the fun used cheaper-cut sails and spreaders (the latter maybe better actually!). That said, Frank Bethwaite was horrified when he saw the production L2 - heavy with over-full sails. He had developed it from a chine design, as Laser wanted to have a round-bilge hull to give a family resemblance to the Laser 1, but it would almost certainly have planed better with the chines.

I remember putting a Laser2 kite up in a force 6 and being blown flat by the time it was 1/2 way out the chute. Yup, I'll aspire to mid talent! |

Rupert, far from mid talented, you are one of the psychic sailors who always spots the shifts.

I can spot a shift, but a giant spinnaker on a small boat on the Irish sea with the wind up - not my area of expertise, 30 years ago or now! |
