I am afraid our combined age is quite a few years more than that Graeme! As for mental age and I.Q I cant possibly comment. Good to see you did not chicken out after compairing sail sizes. Andrew |

Sorry to disillusion you - but unless you have some seriously out of class sails your mainsail is 15% smaller than a B14, the jib about 40% smaller, and the kite is hardly worth putting up.

Shhhh don't say things like that! He's going to go into a hissy fit and it'll take ages to calm him down again. |

Well i'm glad you have got out onto the wet stuff. Don't be too hard on superspars they are genrally really good but it is hard for them and you to set up the rig on a brand new class. Have they given you any base settings to work from?

Marke The sails are bigger! We put the main over our B14 Simkins/Norths (which I believe are one of the biggest sets of B14 sails avalible). There is extra area at the top where the sails are taller and squarer. Graeme has photos to prove it. So not quite the figures on the Alto website. Andrew |

Are you saying there is a "traditional" gooseneck with a gnav? AIn't gonna work cos the gnav pushes the boom away from the mast. |

Its difficult to tell from photos but if the rig is bigger than a B14, I'm surprised that it gets away with a single spreader rig. Surely it will need cap shrouds and a upper sreaders ? What's going to stop the mast inverting with the kite up ? Also, thats a big mainsail to not be fully battened. The gnav looks very weedy and as pointed out it pushes the boom out of the gooseneck, so, this needs pinning before sailing. I'd forgotten about how annoying it is to loose the mainsheet end throught the transom flaps. I also remember, thinner ropes going down the self bailers and being a sod to get out. RS Main laid over B14 Comparison Way bigger than the RS and what half a metre maybe more on a B14?
Yes it appears that way, it's a round steel gooseneck in a square hole, it had already broken before I took it on, and the boom twists. The sail pressures the Gnav strut and knocks it out of the top. They had lashed up a strop around the mast which I removed and fixed a pulley system to the boom to tidy things up, so this may also have contributed to the issue. But if (like Seldon) the manufacturer (Superspars) had incorporated a pulley in the mast side of the goose neck we wouldn't be having this discussion. Clearly Superspars don't do Gnavs just yet, or if they do they supplied the wrong boom, or Rondar had the wrong boom laying around to fit to this rig, but whatever, what year is this? 2008? It's a proto boat so ours not to complain, we accepted there would be issues, but just didn't expect issues on proven technology like Gnavs. It's just spoiling our enjoyment of an excellent race machine and super sea boat. I still can't believe we managed to handle that rig, in that wind, it is huge, just imagine what we could do with a smaller main and less parasitic drag. |

i'm an engineer, I like numbers, so some self indulgency... Alto (from class website):
B14 (from Ovington site): Hull Weight 62 kg And as pointed out these are the 'calculated' areas not the actual area which is close to 50m2 in total. Fairly compelling really. Update: just seen your post, something is therefore incorrect either on your site, or your photos, do tell Edited by Phil eltringham |

Well somethings wrong somewhere.
That's a big spinnaker on the B14. Is it a mast head take off? I believe the spinnaker we have is around 17.5 sq m, don't forget this is the display model from the show supplied because my production boat aint ready. My feelings are having a big spinnaker isn't an issue since you can always make a decision wether to deploy or not. I'm now wondering if the jib is bigger as well, I'm off down there this avo if I manage to get back from the Kent Show in decent shape and the breadknife hasn't given my wallet too big a hammering, perhaps I'll measure it. |
