This is back in my windsurfing days in my teens. I had a c**p start and fell in which meant I was at the back of the fleet with the beginners, many of which could only just about sail a course never mind know which was port and starboard. After several near misses I ended up running straight into a board who was on port tack. Even to this day I remember shouting and swearing at this poor beginner that if he doesn't know the rules he shouldn't be on the water and to get out of my way, both of us ended in the water and this was, I pretty sure, the only time I have retired because I wasn't doing very well. Fast forward about 4 years and I have matured into, even though I say it myself, a pretty good windsurfer and I was invited by the local region to give a talk on race tactics. One of the subjects I covered was keeping out of the way of back markers and how you should be careful not to intimidate them as they are the future of the sport and the skill of a good sailor is the ability to sail through them with least interference. A hand went up at the back of the hall. You guessed it, it was the sailor I ran into 4 years earlier, he then proceeded to tell the rest of the audience of our little incident. I was waiting for the world to swallow me up but unfortunately it didn't and I had to spend the next few minutes apologising!

Probably my most embarassing moment was when me and a mate deathrolled our borrowed Spice as we were coming into land - we had come round the headland of the bay where the wind was curling round gusting and shifting like mad - not a good idea with such a large main!! - we got hit by a large gust my helm fell out of the boat keeping hold of mainsheet and i failed dismally at keeping the boat upright heading towards the shore way to fast and deathrolled right in front of the owners of the boat!!

Fortunately me and my helm just hung on to the mast and it didnt turtle or hit the shore!! skillful i think!

its gotta be when during a very very windy(F5-6) reggatta. we were proud of our record of being the only boat not to have capsized all week until the last race with a steady F4 were we deathrolled on the start...the embarrassment! still won the whole thing though!
