I'm thinking about fitting lowers to the n12 but how do you know how tight they need to be?

Is your N12 Hog stepped or Deck stepped, not sure about N12's but on my Phantom i had them so there was no slack but not tight that way when you used the kicker they stopped the lower mast beding

It means the same as keel stepped basically, the bottom of the mast sits in the bottom of the boat, rather than it sitting on top of the foredeck. |

Yea the bottom of the mast sits at the bottom of the boat, which is single floored so it's a fair way down.

On Boats like N12's Merlin Rockets etc. They have a wooden spine that runs down the middle of the boat, Well the hog is the bit of wood usually infront of the centre board case, which the mast foot sometimes sits. Hence hog stepped mast. Deck stepped is where the mast is stepped on the deck. Hog stepped boats dont usually need lowers. Where as Deck stepped boats dont have deck support up the mast and hence need lowers to help control the mast bend induced by the kicker. The advange of Deck stepped mast is that you have alot more control over the rake and rig setup. Deck Stepped:

I suggest you don't fit them then. As you'll go slower, as you don't know enough about your rig to warrant them. If I were you I'd talk to the N12 class and get one of there very good tuning guides. And go on a training day. Then you'll understand how and when to use them. Not very forum helpful but probably more helpful in the long run. |

I would seek more advice from the class. Lowers are generally adjustable on N12s, so the question of how tight they need to be is one with many answers depending on circumstances. I usually used to use them downwind, with the mast ram controlling bend at deck level upwind. The other danger is that if you have them on tight upwind then let of the shroud for the downwind bad things might happen...

My phantom is so old it doesn't have lowers, but someone in the class has suggested I experiment with a rope strop attached at the chain plates then given a turn round the mast at gooseneck level, to see if it solves my rig problems (ie too bendy). I shall give it a go, but with caution; some of the older boats have been known to collapse under the mast, sending the mast through the bottom of the boat, when the owners have tried to apply modern boat rig tensions.
It's certainly not something I would be rushing in to. |
