Topic: The cost of sailing Posted: 27 Jan 05 at 4:04pm |
I've just had a read of the article about the cost of each Olympic medal at Athens 2004 for Team GB and was really pleased to see that sailing returns the best value for each medal won:
The full article is on the BBC website at http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/front_page/4209061.stm I hate the fact that they are quantifying the cost per medal in the way they have (surely talent comes into it too?) but it is good for sailing. Does this mean we should get more funding for Beijing? |

It is excellent for sailing. But the notion of chopping back expenditure on sports which didn't get results in the most recent games will in time lead to no funding for any sports - one 'bad games' and a sport is out with no way back. One less sport for the next games, go round the circle a few times and bingo, you've no sports left. Utterly daft! |

Well posted Mark. The RYA has its blind spots, but it's difficult to knock the excellent use of funding and the programs they have put together. Do you tink that we will maintain the momentum? |

It still remains one of the most expensive sports to
host at an Olympics, particularly in return for the ridiculously low level of media coverage it is given |

i think the low media coverige is because the races are so long and dont foget you have to have a copper in the sky to film it and i bet costes loads in petrol money. by the way did anyone see the fotage of the 49ers raceing on bbc extra. that was good .

How about having team racing as an olympic sport? Very fast races (sub 10 min), lots of action, even if the rules are complicated people will understand that one team must finish before the other, so are very TV friendly. I understand that this will probably not happen because it requires countries finding another 6-8 people, but it will only require a small amout of extra investment in a flight or two of 420s or fireflys which will remain the property of the organisors thus saving expence for countries to enter. not a bad idea mabye you could sail a more exciting boat rather than a 420 maybe something assmetric. that would be quite good tv coverge and very exciting

Although adding asymmetrics to team racing could make things 'interesting' and it was the I14 fleet that invented the sport. I think that it would remove some of the fun and aggression, the dead run on a team racing course provides some of the closest racing on the course. As with only two sails gybes can be done very quickly and violent luffing is possible. With asymetrics the fleet disperses at the top mark and there is little contact untill the bottom mark. Depending on the size of the entry the whole competition could be done in a day or two, or it could be spread out with a few races a day so that the whole thing could be slotted into TV shedules.
