I always wonder what happened to my first Scorpion. This was a long time ago when our Prime Minister at the time was into sailing. My Scorpion (625) was called "Mourning Sickness" - I sold it to Mike Lennon who was just a nipper at the time. Mike's previous boat was a bright green Mirror called - yes you've guessed it "Kirmit", or was it Kermet?

My dad's Scorpion was called 'Little Miss' (1040) (his brother-in-laws was 'Miss Muppet'). When I started this thread, I cautioned that a boat may live up to the name you give it.
I've just realised this was the case with his boat... From the sailing club at Sheerness on the Isle Of Sheppey, it's possible to sail to Burnham-on-crouch via a shortcut just past Shoeburyness up into the river roach, before heading up into the Crouch. This is a much quicker route than sailing all the way round (see map pulled from our website). Anyway, for a long time he'd harboured an ambition to try sailing this route. The day came when he decided to go for it. He called the Ministry of Defence to check if they were firing at Shoeburyness. They didn't answer so he assumed they weren't, and it would be ok. After setting sail on his own in the Scorpion for Southend, he entered the waters off Shoeburyness. Then vroooooooooooooooom, a test shot flew past within metres of his mast and landed in the water ahead of him!! A 'little miss'! (ok so a near miss is probably more accurate ). Minutes later the MOD had sent out a launch and warned him he was in the firing line! After towing him out of the way, they warned the forecast wasn't good, with winds of F5 or above soon. He sailed on a bit further, but by then the weather had turned for the worse. He decided to sail back across the estuary to the cliffs at Minster (the next town along from Sheerness). Unfortunately, after reaching Minster he capsized in the choppy waters. Upon righting he noted the rudder had drifted away and sunk! In Force 5+ he had to sail the 2 miles back to the club rudderless! Luckily, this was one of his party tricks and he's probably the only person ever to have sailed our 40-mile Round the Island Race rudderless!! In the end he got home safely. The next low tide he went back down to Minster and found his rudder! Incidently, the Isle Of Sheppey Sailing Club used to have largest fleet of Scorpions in the country (30+ boats). No doubt redback sailed his one here too James www.iossc.org.uk Edited by James Bell |

Having spotted this thread on names, and seeing the comments on Slugs and the colour green, perhaps I should point out that a few years back Lucy Lee's husband won the Cherub Nationals crewing in a bright green Cherub called "Green Slug". Green boats have won the last 5 Cherub Nationals... And here it is,

I crewed a graduate back in the eighties called Souperior Dragon. I can only assume this came after Soup Dragon and then Souper Dragon. May be if you read this Paul you can confirm.

There's a boat at Grafham with the name "Reservoir Cat" which we found particularly funny - it being a catamaran obviously! I've got a yellow Laser 4000 which a friend of mine nicknamed Custard Express, this name has now stuck so am steeling myself against hundreds of years of maritime tradition to change the name to that.

My old man has had a sequence of increasingly expensive Enterprises, the last two of which were named 'Shy Tot' and 'Shy Talk' respectively. I'm still mulling over the name of my recently acquired RS300. Just to explain, one of the suggestions was an impulse purchase on ebay, when I had actually been looking at engagement rings to get some idea of what my other half likes and doesn't like. Not that she knows that or anything!
Suggestions greatfully received

Not all chemicals are bad. Without chemicals such as hydrogen and
oxygen, for example, there would be no way to make water, a vital ingredient in beer. |
