I have quite a number of RYA quals and Im not sure that they give me any more right to make comments on a subject than anyone else, less if anything .
BTW you should see what the g/f can do with mine in the Lark........ (mostly hitting me in the face each gybe/drop) |

One of the things that happened on the Boards forum (sister windsurfing
publication to Y&Y) which is a far more happy place than here, is that a thread offering the opportunity for folk to introduce themselves and their experience along with other useful data like age, job, beach they sail from, general stuff like that. I appreciate the need for anonymity for some in the workplace, but a lot of what GKL is looking for would be served by filling in the profile. As to me, I've never made any secret about my newbieness when it comes to boats and perhaps my general sailing knowledge from my windsurfing background confuses folk at times when I offer tactical advice. So, an opportunity to introduce oneself would save a lot of bad feeling imho. |

I think the forum needs more moderating like with Ricks post about his sailing club ramp it was hijacked by "Skiffers" and Mark deleted all the crap! (Perhaps Y&Y could give some more mature forumtees Moderator powers?) Another idea would be to delete the post count and star system this would stop young lads posting sh*t just to get 5 stars! Which unl;ike the McDonalds they all work at does not mean a pay rise! |

I noticed that, I'm in 2 minds whether I'm glad for it, or annoyed that i missed a decent bun-fight. Come on who didn't run toward the crowds when you heard the cry drift across the playground.....'fight, fight fight'

I might be sailing it, but it's still sh**e!

This thread smacks of the current lack of individual resposibiltiy taken for actions from our current society. And the populations need for constant nannying.
Look at what has been posted and use your brain to agree or disagree. You can just as easily spout total crap as an expert as you can find an arguments 'silver bullet' as a novice. Stop looking to others for confidence in your own decisions. This place already looks like a playground where kids flock around the popular individuals to castigate in confidence. Any potential change that increases that is very bad for real debate, in my view. |

This thread smacks of the current lack of individual resposibiltiy taken for actions from our current society. And the populations need for constant nannying. The point of posting this thread was to get people to think before they post, i.e.to encourage people to be a little more honest about their real knowledge.......take responsibility. Disagree...it can be difficult for a novice to sort the wheat from the chaff. The sailing fraternity seems to be one of the worst offenders when it comes to expert b***sh*t.
Nothing wrong with my confidence sunshine I obviously sail what I like and not what fashion dictates.
Exactly the problem with this forum, Point well put If forumites put their money where their mouth was it would only decrease the potential. IMO

Which is exactly why any kind of self documenting expertise assessment is doomed to failure. |

.....You're right again Jim, I guess I was being a little naive expecting that level of honesty. foolish me. ...on a slightly different tack, although related. Has anyone noticed how the feel (breadth of contributors?) of this forum has become much narrower over the last year or so.

Not sure what you mean about "narrower" GK. Care to quantify? I've only been posting for 18 months so I'm a relative novice.
But I think this forum represents the "bar" at most sailing clubs (assuming they are licensed). There's the old hands in one corner decrying the bad manners of the young upstarts while the youngsters brag about speed and gadgets. Was it ever thus! I don't personally know any of the major posters on this forum. Not a one. Probably never will. I don't post because I have some great message that needs to be broadcast or because I am an expert. I just enjoy sharing my opinions and love of the sport. I have been sailing for almost 30 years and my signature "You'd think I'd be better at it by now", sums it all up. I am a slightly above average club sailor who has an in depth technical knowledge of how my boat works. This helps offset my lack of sailing intuition. I think. I love winning, especially as it rarely happens. Does this invalidate my opinion? Not a bit of it. Forums are all about swapping experiences and opinions. The reader can sift whatever he/she likes and realise that experiences and opinions are all personal. The forum is one big peer review wher ideas are swapped, grown or slammed. One last thought. Einstein was a patents clerk. It would have been woeful if we had ignored his thoughts just because his signature block lacked the necessary doctorates etc to give his papers gravitas. Just MHO. Same as all yours' are. |
