Found the solution from a Team Race schedule!
I'm going to use a 'ladder' system: 18 team more or less sorted in order of competence. That's three flights with each three matches. Winner climbs a rung and loser goes down a rung on the next ladder. That way better sailors will meet better competition, and going down the sailors will meet also equal teams. This can be done each time without a fixed time limit. The boat that wins the most of his matches wins the event. Eventually the two best teams will end up all the way on the top rung and the worst team all the way at the bottom, competing against each other. |

Unfortunately six boats is the maximum. More would create a budget problem.
I've managed to talk them into a maximum of 20 teams. See where that leads me. |

Thanks Kanga,
If I split in two groups of 12 boats I will have to do 66 matches per group, which takes about 25 hours. I'm already at 4 groups That will take 11 hours + plus quarter finals + finals.... No breaks, no damage, no wind shifts, and instant crew changes. I'm beginning to think I will have to go back to the OA and insist on less teams.... |

it sounds like you have quite a lot on to get all that racing done over a weekend if i am honest - usually you can get a full 12 boat RR in, with playoffs no problem, but with a full day on the water. Otherwise, every boat has to do 23 races just for a round robin. The easiest thing to do it maybe split them into 2 groups of 12 (use your club racing judgement for this, as its impossible otherwise) and do two round robins, you will just have to start early. If you run out of time,t he winner is the most wins int he RR and if you have time, you can run perhaps just a final, between the top from each RR and a petit-final in the same flight for the two 2nd place boats in each RR. Thats probably the fairest to be honest. |

On 6& 7 June my club is organizing a Match Race event. They want a format for twenty four teams to
compete in a fair way using 6 boats in only two days. I'm struggling
with examples from the IU Manual and can't quite get it to work.
The only way I see at the moment, is to use four groups who compete in two divisions, and the four group winners in a round robin and then a final / semi final. But how to get the groups fairly equal without knowing anything about the competitors? And its still is about 18 hours on the water, which is to much. Can it be done? |
