Just had a look at the notice of race and it says you have to have 5 crew and a skipper with no minimum weight.

Calum is right with the backstay, it makes hell of a difference in strong breeze upwind, just remember to let it off down. The sail needs to be flat, a fair handful of kicker too. Because of the small jib, pinching really stalls the slot, and make sure u keep the main in, never let it out much, find other ways of depowering. Make sure you can get hold of a copy of the rig tuning guide for those sails, they are really responsive to good rig tensioning, a badly set up rig is game over.

If it's going to be windy then load up with the fat boys..... The very first RYA BUSA match race qualifier was sailed off calshot in a force 6, 5 crew (total) and no weight limit in 1st class 8's which are pretty similar to the j80's I was on a boat trimming main where eveyone apart from the helm was 85kg+... coming off the start line against Ian Walker and some cambridge lightweights - I was like "We're higher and faster..we're higher and faster..", "we're higher and faster...oh fck it, just don't hit the windward mark" Have fun... |

Really? Can you observe whoever rigs it, to make sure its set up the same as the others then? How well is this controlled? |

If it is the RYAs boats then there is a chap who works for the RYA that goes around and rigs them all together at the same time and he checks to make sure they are all the same. I have helped him take the masts down before and everything is done in a set pattern and everything is pretty much on the same setting. It was drilled into me to make sure everything went back into the correct holes and places! He even repairs them when they get dinged or bits 'fall' off!! So if you get to the location a few days before hand ( if poss ) you can see them being rigged unless they are there already? PVC tape is used in a vast amount as well !! Edited by andygw |

Im guessing its going to be in the RYA's 80's at Queen Marry in which case they are all very well matched.

It is an NSSA event but it is at queen mary's in J80s so I assume they will be the RYA's.

what exactly do you want to know... Spent the last 9 days at QM sailing those boats in training for the BUSA qualifier that was there at the weekend. The thing is though that if its at QM theres a good chance it will come down to just knowing the venue as it can be very very light and when it is then a bit of local knowledge always seems to win. There s the little secrets to making the boats go fast that haven't been mentioned but they seem to be a personal preference thing and perhaps just a coincidence that all the fast boats have the same personal preferences... Yes the boats are all fairly matched but unless your going to be at teh winter final you aren't going to notice it. There are "magic" numbers for the jib cars. One thing to take into account is that the second bottom panals on the jibs are just WRONG its a fact of life so its much much more about getting the slot as best you can than trying to make that bit look right. I put a lot of trust in my bowman. If you have a very good one then you are going to do well as you can afford to be more aggressive and creative at teh top markwhich gives you the advantages. These boats are very basically set up so its not too complicated but there is definetly a "quick" routine at the top mark so i'd very much recomend having a couple of "dry" run throughs of everything before you go racing. remember you are racing 5 up no so its not so much a dinghy anymore. And trimmers, remember to talk to the helm. Helm, its not your job to get everyone doing theirs, thats SLLLLOOOOOWWWW, get someone in the middle to run the boat who has their head screweed on the right way so you can just DRIVE!!! if its light you will have a tough time, i recomend if its your first time driving, setting the boat up to have a fairly wide groove to make it a bit easier to sail the thing, but Tom is right they do respnd well to subtlty and well timed movements they are big rudders to there is a fair bit of "feel" if its very light and you are struggling to get much on the rudder try going traveller up a bit to get a bit of bite on the rudder, remember that this only really raises the boom 98% of the sail is still working fine so dont worry to much about that. Think about the traveller in these boats its probably one of the most vital tools as it will either make you rapid or give you second place. Think about where you want it during a tack or gybe. The long and short of it is the boats respond well to clear simple thinking and a bit of common sense. PM me if you have any specific questions and ill give you a bit more of an insight sorry if its a bit vague but if you really want to know about the boats etc then go on one of the training sessions, they are worth 4 times what you pay to attend... |
