Topic: Topper removal Posted: 16 Jan 05 at 1:34pm |
I need to move a Topper and launch trolley from rural Cheshire to North West Scotland (near Ullapool) this Spring and I'm looking for alternatives to putting it on top of the car - that space is already occupied with a roof box!! Anyone know of a carrier who will move it for a sensible price? Any other suggestions? Thanks |

Towing needs a road trailer and tow bar. Significant investment for a one-way trip as have neither!!

If your car is long enough duck tape the topper to the side of the car. This would probably work best on an estate on MPV, old volvos especially.

Rent your topper to someone at your sailing club for the summer and then borrow / rent one off someone local in Ullapool? Post it? |

Take off the roof box, put the topper in its place and then chuck everything that was into the roof box into the topper instead. Or double deck the roof rack so the roof box is over the topper... Or get somebody else to drive and sail it up... Or melt it down and put in into the roof box as well. |

Of course you could just tie it to the back, and drag it
up along the road, with not to much loss in performance I suspect... |

With someone riding in it to keep it on the road? I remember when young and stupider riding behind a landrover on a Kayak on a snowy road in wales. One ride there were 4 of us on board, and we went round a corner a little fast, all ending up in the ditch. I bounced, but one of the others broke her leg, which as we were in the mountains involved rather a scary trip to Aberystwyth Hospital... For some reason we never did it again! Always wanted to, so I'd volunteer for the ride!

If you are taking it on one way trip to Ullapool , why not just abandon it in a field near home and save a lot of bother for same end result

Or you could hire a long wheelbase van and put the boat in the back, plenty of space for boat, associated parafinalia, and the contents of the roof box. If you run out od space for people the roof and a roll of duck tape is always a good option, it saves driver being distracted by noisy kids (besides they always want to stick their head out the window).
