We are currently using the end for end pole system with an uphaul/downhaul hook in the center of the pole. With this arrangement the pole can get lost during capsizes. Also I'm pretty sure there must be systems that are easier to use. Tried the ramp system last summer. No prob with loosing the pole with this system but it seemed no easier. Our spinny work isn't bad but we are looking for improvement particularly with consistently keeping the kite full through the gybe. This summer we want to try the trolley system with a bungee from the boom end around the front of the mast and a block on the pole. A single ended system where the pole comes in before the gybe. The class rules are OK with this but we can't use a launcher. Can any symmetric sailors, past or present, give me any tips on the pros and cons before I start drilling pop rivet holes all over the place. Thanks. Edited by GK.LaserII |

Hmm not that I've used them but I've seen old folk who still do, but isn't that
what the crew's for? Isn't that why they bend over? Are they not some sort of recepticle. One of the reasons I never quite took to sailing pre assyms.. |

....Old folk, that's me I like old movies, old furniture and reckon the Stones/Pink Floyd are still the Mutts Nuts. The crew's my wife so we need a system that keeps her happy. I thought you might suggest I forget the old boat and get a Cherub. |

we used to have the ramp system but had the string conecting the two outside of the rope loop for the uphaul/ downhal. seemed to work well and had no problems with the gybeing have seen some people with elastic around the boom that the pole runs along look at the 505 website |

Yep ditto - we have the 'trip grips' at each end, which give you a larger target area: just grab and wrap your hand around the end+grip and the guy is released. This is slightly easier I reckon than having to aim your thumb at the piston part itself. Then as olly says, a line between the two clips which runs outside the uphaul/downhaul attaches the pole to the boat. |

This sounds a bit like those old veteran car instructions..
Insert the crank handle into that little hole in the front at the bottom of the radiator then turn it... |

I've never really found a pole system that I like... The Cherub really stresses pole systems (if you have a vintage Cherub with a pole kite that is). On the whole I think my least unfavourite is the keyhole ring ((like at the bottom of this page) but I'm never quite convinced by that fitting... I don't like having to have the downhaul tied onto the U that also provides the keyhole.

To True, The lesser of several evils. Pain in the ar*e it might be but getting the symmetric kite working well is very satisfying and so much more versatile. The keyhole thingy looks like the ramp system and we tried that last year. It seems better than the hook system and we might go back to it if the trolley doesn't work out.
I've had the 505 site on my favourites list for a while, their current system looks like the trolley rig. Also the Laser 2s made in the USA are using the same arrangement. Can't find anywhere that discusses the pros and cons though. Was hoping someone had experience of it. I was thinking of maybe getting a RS 500 next year but I'm slowly going off the idea. (nought personal GRF) Oh well..will probably try and jury rig it with duct tape and try it out before I start drilling holes. Cheers Chaps Edited by GK.LaserII |

With the ramp, an alternative to the metal keyhole thingy is a rope keyhole thingy: http://www.draycotewater.co.uk/fleets/fireball/html/rigging_ -_spinnakers_-_the_pol.html (scroll down to "double ended"). One thing to watch with the 'ball is that the geometry is exactly right to allow the ramp to hook onto the jib luff on occasions - try to keep the ramp facing outwards. My crew seems reasonably content with this system. Mind you he'd never sailed at all till about 8 months ago, so what would he know |

I'm having trouble envisaging this 'trolley' system. I have to say I have never used a ramp with one of those keyhole thingies as far as I can remember, usually just a loop of rope formed in the uphaul/downhaul line. I'm not sure how a single ended system is going to stop the kite collapsing either. Unless you have a fork end rather than a normal fitting...
