Topic: How do you tell a FRP Enterprise from a G Posted: 21 Nov 07 at 6:18pm |
Bare with me here, this is my 1st post!! I'm looking to buy a used Enterprise this weekend and the vendor has described it as a very early FRP boat. Is there any way that I can tell a GRP boat from a FRP one? Upon contacting the Enterprise Association, they tell me that the hull/sail number indicate a 1985 build date, but the FRP boats were not made until a few years later. It could be that the boat I'm looking at is an early FRP prototype according to the Association. Can anyone give me a few ideas on what to look for that may confirm that the boat is FRP rather than GRP? I have been told that the hull thickness will be greater with a FRP construction (about an inch in thickness?) and that if you stand at the bows and try and compress each side of the hull inwards (about 18" from the bow point) that an FRP boat will not compress, whereas a GRP one will? Any information/details will be gratefully received! Thanks |

I believe the builder is/was Jack Holt? When I looked briefly at the boat some time ago, there was a small plate on the back which said something like"------ Middlesex?

FRP = Fibre Reinforced Plastic? Which is the same thing as Glass Reinforced Plastic, isn't it?

Glass (Fibre) Reinforced Plastic (GRP) can be called Fibre Reinforced Plastic (FRP) but FRP doesn't have to have any glass fibres in it if you see what I mean.... |

I was thinking the same thing, although I suppose FRP would allow for some sneaky carbon/kevlar in there... Cheeky Ents, always looking for a performance edge! |

GRP is usually just glass and resin with gelcoat on the shiny side, FRP has a layer of glass weave, then a layer of foam, then a layer of glass then gelcoat. FRP will be thicker, but it will still only be about 7mm or so. If you can see an edge somewhere, perhaps if you open a hatchcover, you might see the foam. Also, FRP will compress slightly, and possibly be covered in small dents if it's an old boat, GRP is unlikely to dent. I know nothing about Enterprises as such but 1985 does sound early for FRP. Cherubs were messing about with it then but it was not really that mainstream at that time AFAIK. |

1985 does sound quite old for FRP. My dad's Ent was one of the earlier holt FRP boat with the sail number being 22371 and that was early 90's. All holt boats had diagonal stripes 3/4 down on the side deck.
