Calling all parents! What's a good gift for an 8yr old who can just about sail and might be soon getting her own boat?
£10 budget or so. It's a girl, if that matters. Thanks, forum family! |

Wind hawk, the little orange jobbie: I find it very useful in a Topper in light, shifty winds. Not much use on the Contender but at 8 years old, I don't think she'll be sailing that type of boat just yet. Rashie: the supermarket versions (Asda, Sainsbury's) don't last for very long but she'll grow out of it in one season anyway. Unfortunately, the shelves are full of prancing reindeer and impossibly jolly old men with red coats and white beards (and some Santas too), so it's Internet shopping. Sunglasses are very important even at this time of year: the sun's low on the horizon and the glare on the water can be blinding, especially if she's in charge of the spinnaker, always looking up. If you're ready to expand your budget, you could think of gloves, buoyancy aid or sailing boots. Finally, you could tell her to wait a bit and you'll take her shopping at the Dinghy Show in March! Loads of gear at good prices |

Buff headgear, trendy with lots of designs. It will help keep her warm. http://www.sportingtriangle.com/html/original_buff.html Or a bag with loads of pockets. Our 9yr old Grandaughter thought that was cool. The bag is a bit more than a tenner though. But any 8yr old sailor is worth it Edited by GK.LaserII |

i would agree with the buff idea. there can be really cool designs (like a welsh one ). alternatively something like a pair of gloves on special offer? or mabe a book or dvd? or how about a hat for sailing? (makes a huge difference as children cannot regulate body temperature as well) other than that i dont know hope it helps

A hat sounds good, one you can tie on. Although the hawk windicator might be an idea, they are a bit vulnerable to being hoiked off by passing mainsheets.
