Hi,

i had some spare time a year ago and i compiled the below list.  the reason i did this is to determine the best dinghy for me.  The values that i used are obviously open to scrutiny and i am sure some people out there will disagree with the values used.  I hope you find this informative

Glenn,

Thanks for the stats. Now all I have to do is drop 14kg and I'll be average.  But then again I always knew that I was above average

The weight list just goes to prove that dinghy sailing has taken a wrong turn somewhere and become a sport for small people...the only options in the list for 2 average 40ish men sailing together are the 505 and the Star (not a dinghy!)

Is it any wonder that dinghy sailing is declining and sailors are migrating to the keelboat and cruiser fleets.

Is it not time to start protesting - a 100kg+ sit in at the Dinghy Show perhaps! We can all sit on the sidedecks of the dwarf classes and show everyone just how fragile they are!

Yes I feel a bit agrieved even though I sail a 4000 which carries weight well.  If you look at the 4000 weight equalisation chart http://www.laser4000.org.uk/docs/rackchart.pdf

you'll see that at about 89kg (in kit) makes me heavy for a helm.  I suspect the chart was produced for people without kit or the numbers were dug up 20 years ago.  These days most blokes are taller than my 5' 10" and when they get older they're going to be off the scale.

Does that chart of the general population (which includes many inactive and overweight people) reflect the dinghy sailing population, who are generally fitter and more active?

Can we use it the other way around? Can I turn it sideways and prove that since I weigh about 76kg, I am statistically proven to be still 25 years old???

Can larger sailors ever bring up with subject without using derogatory terms like "dwarf" and "midget"????

Since it seems they can't stop insulting lighter sailors, can we in return call any multiclass association for them "Fatsail"?????

I don't mind, but some of the smaller fireball sailors might take issue.

Nice one Chris. I'm 10kg under the "average" weight for my age. All you Fatsailors should stop insulting people who take care and pride in their health.
