Was anyone else bitterly disapointed by the tiny snipet of sailing that was featured on sport personality last night?

The team that made us the best sailing nation for the second olympics running weren't even nominated for the team award  instead it was given to a bunch of overpaid footballers!!

the only sailing shown was given about as much time as the darts (those well known "athletes") with someone doing a weird voice over, only mentioning Ben Ainsley by name, calling Shirley, Sarah & Sarah "3 blondes" and no mention of the rest of the squad....

And it's not just i'm biased towards my favourite sport - even Lance Armstrong 6 (!!!) times tour de france winner only got a passing comment, and he's done all this after having brain surgery and chemo for advanced cancer not that long ago!!  But it's not cricket or football, so why would anyone be interested??

The BBC seems to be gravitating more and more
toward the lowest common denominator in all
aspects. (as it perhaps arguably should, being as it
is publicly funded)
However, in Sport, the lowest common denominator
(aptly named due to the limited intelligence of all
involved) is football, and it eclipses everything to the
detriment of almost every other sport, except those
cheap and easy to film - snooker, darts, bowls,
gymnastics and golf.

I agree with you both....

The lack of TV coverage sucks i'm affraid!

The Vendee Globe, Ellens world record attempt, not to mention many other races and sailing events taking place around the world....and all we get on television is meagre snippets tagged onto the end of the sport review after the news.....if we are very lucky!

Have you noticed how many sport channels there are on sky? there is even a dedicated GOLF channel and GREY HOUND racing.....no Sailing, Grrrrrr and as for terrestrial.... best I stop now, Headfry is getting angry ...I don't do angry

Like i said, a Sport's popularity to the media is based
on the cost of reporting it.

If a cameraman / comentator can sit on his fat arse,
indoors, in the warm, with a can of coke and a jaffa
cake to hand, for tu'pence an hour, then we will be
subjected to hours and hours and hours of inane
coverage.

They even bring the snowboarding into the
towncentres these days to make life easier!

the only time sailing ever gets into the sports news in when something bad happends

TEAM GBR majority of medals were won by the sailors for the last 2 times but if you were to ask any joe bloggs they would prob think it was the athletics team. Even the rowing used to get more coverage!!!

It was very encouraging to hear someone at work moaning about the lack of sailing coverage.  Particularly as she used to be an international 400 metre runner, still coaches at a high level and hasn't been on a sailing boat in her puff!

Just to prove that there is occassionally some sailing coverage on BBC news - there was a section in the sports news this morning about 7.40am on BBC1

Ellen Macarthur got about 1 minute of coverage on her record attempt and it was up to date news about her current problems.

Not bad, well done to Ellen's PR department and to the BBC

Its stupid, that someone tryin to do such a hugh thing like sailing solo round the world in the fastest time gets such little coverage, a achivement like that by a british sailor should be a feature in the sports section of the news not just a 1 min clip.

As for the coverage on sports personality of the year the sailing achivements where hardly mentioned, they should give the sailors more respect, they where the team that achived the most at the olympics.

Katie made a good point also about Lance Armstrong what he has achived is amazing he should recive more recognition than he has.
