What do people think to the new format, and what boats are doing the trails?

I think the Admiral Cup's days as "World Championship of Offshore Racing" have gone and are not coming back. I don't say that with any pleasure. The sorts of owners with the budgets to indulge in grand-prix would rather day-race with the King of Spain in the Med than thrash around offshore events in the channel - or stay onshore while paid minions do the offshore racing. Cheap air-fares mean flying crews out to events in warm places has become much more feasible. The game has moved on. And the boats? Well I welcome the Mumm 30 as an entry-level boat. I'd have found the Farr 40 a more inspiring choice than the Swan 45 but I expect RORC had their reasons. Maybe the Farrs have their own plans elsewhere. I don't like to see IRC being used at Grand Prix level but politically it is hard to see any other rule being used.

It looks like the selectors are having difficulties finding "big boat" UK entries. See http://www.sailweb.co.uk/default.asp#330

The Admirals Cup has been cancelled. http://www.rorc.org/news/ac_cancelled.php Hard to believe that it is not many years since owners would build new boats just in the hope of competing in this event. How times change.

Thats the second time they have cancelled it, isn't it? If so that must be the end of the Admirals Cup - obviouslt too boring an event to get boat sponsors and owners interested in it. |

Yes - 2nd time. There used to be several of these grand-prix three-boat-team events and they have all gone. It must be very hard logistically to put a team together and the lack of an international grand-prix rule certainly doesn't help. Also, difficult as it may be for us to believe, it seems not everyone in the world is dying to do a regatta in the Solent, versus the Med, Florida etc. |
