Does that not illustrate the problem of mixing planing and non-planing boats in the same race?

What a sadly negative attitude to sail boat racing and racing development.
Time to acknowledge that yachts can plane if they are a good design and will also look after their crew in rough stuff, faster a to b and get out of harms way quicker than a heavy weight non planner that exposes its crew to bad weather longer. That is why we have fast round world boats and not the old juggernauts of the sixties and early seventies. Trouble is so many cruiser owners did not evolve through dinghy ownership I guess? |

I also don't think it was a very generous comment. It was a serious achievement to win against big boats in those conditions! The P762 takes a ton of wind to plane compared with many boats and it is already handicapped for this ability.
Everyone already knows that handicap racing is a huge compromise... |

Hi
We did a simulation with small jib and asymetric kite : TCC = 0.950 instead of 0.957 with a 145% overlapp genoa and symetric kite on pool. The HSA is now at 13,6 (before 17.1) SPA is now at 49,89 with a STL at 3.20 (before 42 at 2.8). For sure itīs not the deal of the year but as the boat is not heavy we increase is capacity to fly in the downwind leg sooner and we should obtain a better AWA upwind thanks to the small jib in hauled. By now we are wondering if a smaller genoa (125-130%) could be interesting also. Our race area (south of France) is a place where a small light breeze (some time below 11 knts TWS) is the maximum we are able to get. Our opponent are Melges 32, Farr 30, Surprise, JPk 9,60. The races are a mix between coastl and windward-leeward I'm conviced in the breeze the boat will fly and come up easily. We saw at 8-9 kts the boat could support a non overlapp jib but we are not fully decided yet. Best Philou |

My comment was not directed at anyone or any boat, but at the sense of trying to handicap boats that sail in different regimes. It's the reason that sailboards no longer race against dinghies, and indeed why it is questionable whether foilers can sensibly race against either: the results are too dependent on the conditions rather than the crews.
For example, a foiling Moth will sail to a PY of 450 when foiling, but would need around 950-1000 if not up on foils. Giving it an average PY around 650 just means it wins against a non-foiling dinghy if foiling, and loses when not. The distinction between planing and non-planing keelboats won't be as marked, but it will be there nonetheless, however much you may wish it wasn't.

Hi Philou,
I know that there are 81 pages of comment regarding the P762, but most of what you suggest has already been tried, so get reading! Our biggest headsail (from memory) is 143%. It is efficient up to about 16 knots true when the boat starts to become overpowered. We also have a 132% genoa that we used for IRC racing, which always felt really underpowered in anything less than 10 knots true. For this reason I wouldn't recommend anything smaller. We have also tried a few spinnaker options - the biggest being a symmetrical 147sqm kite. It gave us a few problems, the worst being that in strong breeze the boat wasn't easy to control, a spinnaker of this size is really too big for the dimensions of the rig. We improved the performance by raising the hoist point by 600mm, but this is risky because the mast isn't supported at this height and it is possible that it might break if the breeze gets too strong, however it is significantly quicker in light winds. We also have an asy spinnaker (44sqm) that we fly off a sprit (STL 3.1), but you can't put a bigger asy on this without raising both the hoist and increasing the sprit length... You are limited by the size of the rig! Chic |

Hi, does anyone know if Fuzzy logic was sold, or if she still available? or are there any others that might be available for sale shortly. I used to sail against Sleeper and zulu in Cardiff, they looked like great little boats

Don't know about Fuzzy Logic but we might be selling soon.. We've had our Projection for seven years but we're considering a bigger boat. Ours is really well set up and was one of the last four to be built. Where are you based? We're going to be in Wales next Saturday - not with the boat unfortunately! Chic

Miles thanks for the info, I would love a 920, but the space is limited to an 8M berth. Chic I am based down in the southwest, but would happily drive/ collect for the right boat. If you do think about selling please ping me a message. Just to chuck this out there, other options I have found, that look interesting platu 25, j80,thompson 780, no accommodation but looks fun. corby 26 (would have to find a friend or 2!) But for some reason the projection seems to keep rising to the top. Sure you all have had similar thoughts. why did the projection win for you? Do any of you ever sleep over on the boat, or is that never going to happen.
