Suppose it depends on whether you think anyone is going to protest you or not...

In a lot of classes, whatever is not permitted is banned. So in such classes, if GPS is not on a list of permitted equipment, you can't use it.

Earlier this year, i noticed that one of the boats at my club had a garmin 201 strapped to their boom...

Can you protest boats in this position as they are in breach of class rules?

Surely you should just concentrate on what you are doing? And not what someone got strapped to their boom?

29er has closed rules and anything not mentioned is prohibited. Non-programmable electronic compases are allowed but I would judge that the 201 falls outside that category so they would be illegal on 29er.

Judge for yourself, though, whether this is really worth the protest committee's time. At a major regatta on a large course, I can see the advantage that GPS could give. Club racing less so. The chances are the sailors of that 29er are just trying to see how fast they are going. If they are beating you then I would argue it is something other than GPS that is doing it for them.

I sail with one -- sometimes , as said above its  only for amusement after the event , peak speeds etc , most useful function in a race would be the electronic compass , but if strapped too boat too far away to see .

not worth worrying about .
