This has mostly been very interesting. If, when wind speed increases to dramatic levels sail area becomes less important but rig efficiency and hull shape become more important why not Tasar. Perhaps, for once, you may need some rig tension and a bit of string for a trap but the principle seems good. In a recent horrible gusty wind at our Peak District club we were the last men standing in our Tasar even if our performance was not stimulating. We are however old and ,at that time very inexperienced Tasar sailors. As for the 405. I have seen them in a good blow and they look fast but unstable on the helm so in a real wind I dont think so.

it occurs to me that "sitting out" takes on real meaning in an IC.

They're dynamite upwind in any sort of breeze, but downwind in light winds the spinnaker free ones do suffer. After all that is a pretty small sail area by current standards. The IC class are currently considering returning to more open hull design rules and reducing the minimum weight a bit in order to get a bit more sparkle in the light stuff. I'm not qualified to comment on the Spinnaker fitted ones. Its still true that many Canoe sailors are richer in years than those in some other performance classes, and they do come in all sizes, not just skinny. Edited by JimC |

hi, having read all 24 pages of this fascinating thread, I wonder where the International 18ft(?) Canoe fits in to the story? I have always been interested in having one and now feel old enough (I'm kidding). Are they good in light airs (such as Lake Geneva/Lac Leman) where I am considering especially. As a teenager (1970's) I saw that the fasted PY rating was this boat and never forgot it. Times change of course. I watched a number act submarine like at Abersoch some years ago (their nationals I think) and was happy to see the pilots were older than me (at that time) - though they looked a lot thinner than me! I guess that (I) could change. I hope this can be considered kind of on topic since they were once supposed to be the fastest dinghy - weren't they? Anthony (age 50 5,10.5'' 85kg) |

With the foiling moths the difference between differing boats top speed reaching is just a knot or so but the difference at the lower end of the wind spectrum means foiling or not foiling. In other words 15knots boat speed or just 5 knots so the boats with the moderate size foils are more likely to win more races over a wider range of wind. I see Rohan just topped Sams speed record even with larger foils so the Fastacraft ones still seem to win either way. 27.9knots. I guess they are now a well refined setup. |

I take it these speeds are being achieved in "bursts" rather than as an average over a 500m course, normal speed record style?

I havnt seen the latest fastacraft foils but I 'think' potentialy Sams
boat is quicker... He hasnt been foiling as long as Rohan though.
Theres a number of other people who should be on the pace too so I wouldnt say its a simple race between those guys.... dont see it being long before the bar is raised though. |

30 knots is a big step from 27.9, remember speed gets exponentially harder to achieve the faster you go, but the pace of development in the International Moth probably means they will hit it soon, the question is will it be Pascoe or Veal that does it first?

Every hull is different, obviously. When you get over 'x' amount of
wind the saze of your sail doesnt really matter it all boils down to hull efficiency at high speeds. The RS 800, especially being one of the most modern boats around is supposed to have an extremely efficient hull hence the original design was apparantly supposed faster than the 49er due to variables such as slightly bigger rig, mast head kite, whatever so they obviously shrunk things down a bit to appeal more to their market. However this means that the 'areodynamic' (or water equivilant) has actually been thought about and therefore could stand good stead in doing well. When your talking about speed, dinghies just dont stand a chance against windsurfers really though too mcuh drag, weight, etc. Want speed start windsurfing. |
