have all you guys suggesting moths ever even sailed one?? (i know you have strawb).
They're seriously difficult boats to sail and take a lot of practise and the rewards won't feel the rewards for a long long time. I think before buying a boat like this you need to seriously ask yourself how good a sailor you are? would you have the dedication and patience to stick with a moth? would you mind for the first few months to be sailing 30% of the time and swimming 70? They're also pretty hard to sell if you don't get on with it. And also there is limited class racing for them so if you want high quality close racing week in week out it is not the boat for you. I'm by no means saying that you shouldn't get a moth if you feel you are ready for it but just that you really need to think hard about it before going ahead....... |

I think PB's right. Although I think 49ers look fun, I wouldn't dream of sailing one! It's always a good idea to have a look what's sailed in your club, visit other local clubs and even consider switching if their fleet suit your need better. As for an alternative to a Laser, a Supernova looks like a decent boat. Maybe not the WOW factor, but fast, with a good PY number, well-balanced and probably more rewarding than a Laser. As for racing and competition, it all depends what's in your club. Then again, weight and height are not everything. Find a boat you love and you'll be on the water often enough to to be competitive. (yep, me in my Contender - wishful thinking on my part ) |

I have sailed moths if only briefly, there are lots of difererent types of moth the Magnum 5 etc look quite wide and are obviously a very different animal to a modern foiler. Personaly i wished that i had stoped sailing laser earlyer and moved on to a moth type boat but then i don't mind persivering. Edited by foaminatthedeck |

Try a 300 with the small rig! Just like a moth was before it became too much for ordinary mortals: the class is having a resurgence now, so they sell well if you don't get on with it, but to my mind it is the best non-trapezing s/hander ever! Find something with a quicker handicap in that class if you don't believe me.... There's a nipper at my club just bought a Magnum 8, but he spends 1/2 hr upside-down for every 5 mins of sailing, and I'm sorry, that's just not fun!! Before that, one of the best young sailors at my other club got one and lasted a month or so. The Moth is inspiring, but to my mind it's too hard |
