yesterday was the first day of our winter series at Tynemouth, although we de-camp to a lake at Druridge bay for the winter as the north sea can be a bit hostile in the dark months. 17 boats on the water yesterday which was great to see. The lake management had tied hay bales to some of the marks' retaining lines, in the fight against blue green algae - don't know how successful this is, but the water was lovely and clear and at least it avoids the blue dye that some places use.
Typically after the 1st race I'd forgotten about the bales - until I crashed into one with predictable results

no, we moved winter venue about 3/4 years ago - the tyne has become a bit silted up upstream of the toon and so the sailing window became a bit narrow.

Think it's barley they use, a lot cheaper than dyes.

Impressive; a couple of months ago I spent a day with Howard and he was telling me what a good series it’s become. Likely too hot for me 😅

Yes, the combination of a good number of boats, on a fairly compact lake surrounded by trees gives a lot to think about - Howard has really driven it along - so we have a less leaky committee boat complete with a cosy cuddy to look after him this winter. A great fleet of some talented sailors and also novices is nice to see as well

Our lake is really empty. It went down to 37% full. It's a long walk to the water and launching, then getting out to the deep water, is muddy and difficult. We had to cancel all opens and eventually all racing ( except an adults Vs kids race last weekend). I've been out in my contender the once in the last 6 weeks; it was like sailing in the bottom of a canyon .. stoppy starty wind. All a bit sh*t right now.

Our pond was a little low today as they don’t pump in if the river is in flood, too much silt.
Not my best day sailing by any means , started as last man off in 11th place and finished 8th . Not my best day on the water by any means . But as they say even a bad day on the water is better than a good day at work.

Forecast yesterday 15 to 25mph winds... We got 1.5 to 2.5 mph winds.. High tide on the river was 9:30ish first race was 10:45, second 12:00. So in both races we were battling against a up to 3 mph tide and lack of wind. This meant keeping in very close to the edges out of the main flow of the river...
First Race, 2/3rds of the way through we were forced to tack across the river and as we tried to head up a little on gaining a little "speed" nothing happened, we just drifted down river, nothing we did would change that.. Eventually we gave up as everyone had passed us by some way and drifted back to the club only sort of under control..
On reaching the club I stood on the bow, the boats owner peered under the hull and a very large lump of weed floated away.. Race two, we just couldn't keep up with the leaders who we often beat.. I suspect we have more weed under there.. Race three.. No other competitors, as they all went home having given up the struggle. so after a long lunch break we did too. |
