IME A2 is not good in seawater* but is fine in fresh, if somebody has bought 'stainless steel' fixings from B&Q, Screwfix or Toolstation to replace something on the boat they will probably be A2 (Toolstation stainless fixings are definitely A2 and are very cheap but it's a limited range of sizes).
* Actually A2 is usable in seawater if you rinse in fresh water after sailing but will rust if you don't, A4 is much better.

and a common problem with stainless fittings and rust is poor attention ot detail with regard to the same grades of stainless being used - mixing a2 and A4 (304 and 316) can lead to some interesting outcomes |

Short answer is dont worry about it.
Stainless steel is really less staining steel and its common to get a little rust staining. Its a 10 minute job to remove the fitting, then clean and/or replace as required |

Hi All,
I am thinking of buying a Wanderer and have found a possible candidate. It needs some work in general to tidy it up but the one thing that worries me slightly is that I see evidence of rust inside the boat coming through the GRP from the lower right hand shroud screw. Would I be right to worry or is there nothing to be concerned at here? ![]() |
