On the other hand if someone like Alistair 'Stork' McLaughlin, who must be over 60 and not exactly a fitness nut can win the RS300 Nationals last year it shows that you don't need to be a super human to sail them - just a super sailor.

Thanks for the reply! I don't think time learning would be a huge issue for me, as I tend to go up the club two or more times a week, I also have a lot of time to do theory and practicing during the week. While i'm not an 'amazing, knows everything and wins every race' type of sailor, I would regard myself as fairly competent and skilled, and having sailed fevas, visions, argos , a laser(only twice), a comet( although i found it quite underpowered and it didnt really push me) and a laser 4k once I would say i am pretty decent

It’s not a hard boat to sail really and you get up to comfortable before very long; obviously sailing it quickly takes some skill but they don’t capsize (at circuit events anyway) anywhere near as much as people would have you believe.
Be prepared to hike hard and move quickly and the are great fun. Certainly try one before you settle for something the ‘mature’ sailors on here would peddle as the best thing since sliced bread!

Not sure how Div 2 damaged the sport, they were only ever for the elite and everybody knew that (I raced against one of Barry Edgington's rivals for the 1992 spot at my club in Div 1). Div 1 was great for average club racers and, with some reservations*, so were Raceboards. Then Formula Windsurfing came along and totally buggered the sport 'cos they could only race in about 9-12 knots, less and racing was cancelled and more you needed to be a gorilla just to get to the start line Plus you needed two boards and four rigs at prices that would make a Merlin sailor's eyes water. * It was the manufacturers that messed things up by freezing out the low volume builders when the RB rule was introduced. At the end of the day they got greedy and, instead of nurturing the long term health of the sport they wanted to sell us something new every year, whether it was any good or not. [/rant]

Whats hard about it, single sail, big foils, buoyant wings that if you lean over too far provide a safety net. It’s only hard if you think you should be able to just sit your arse down and do bugger all

300 is only hard going down wind in a blow, canoe is only hard to tack in a blow.... a Musto is hard to get off the beach in a blow.
