Twenty RS Aero 9s were on the start line (23 before 3 dropped out) at the re-arranged RS Aero UK Nationals at Draycote at the Inland Champs, within the overall 87 RS Aero entries over 3 fleets.
Saturday was breezy with 12-22kn as dark stormy clouds passed by. It was a reminder that on flat water you can get away with being a few kilos lighter and those in the low 80s kg could keep pace with those in the high 80s kg and more near the front of the fleet. On the sea in waves that difference would be felt more upwind. That said, as ever, the cumulation of other sailing factors would take precedence with constant mode changes and directional positioning decisions through the gusts and shifts. On the lively down winds the game was to keep an eye in the rear view mirror to step sideways to engage the front 'arrow head' of the gusts with a swerve promoting acceleration and often planning on the run before soaking down to a broader coarse again. Sunday was a lighter 6-12kn with greater fluctuation and a more volatile results sheet. Our heaviest sailor (about 100kg) led for a lap on the lighter Sunday. Ultimately it was a shift at the top of the second beat that did for him, rather than speed. Great racing both days with constant opportunities. Comebacks were always possible (and vica versa) - never give up! ![]() Edited by Peter Barton - 13 Oct 20 at 2:56pm |

You are probably right Jim. And its positive that better build quality and improved longevity which is pushing manufacturers to chase new designs and options for existing classes. |

You've got an attack of rose tinted specs... Back in the day there were a lot more active classes and just as high a proportion of small classes as there are now. |

Over 2400 RS Aeros (#3400) are built worldwide. However, worthy of consideration in this context is that the large proportion of them are outside the UK. Well done to the Supernovas though. On 'turnout proportions' I was pleased at the first ever calendarised RS Aero event, the Oxford Blue in January 2015, to have 25 RS Aero entries when only about 125 had been sold in the UK at that time. Sure, others may have better proportions but for an RS Aero type boat (suits home club sailors) on a rainy day in the depths of winter I was pleased with 20%. The RS Aero UK Inlands Champs next weekend is now up to 87 entries, with (Back on topic!) a nice fleet of 22 RS Aero 9s assembled for the re-scheduled Nationals and it looks more competitive than ever. For PY race numbers return data benefit it is (almost

When I was first studying stats at Uni ... most of a lifetime and a very long time ago now we had to 'read around' one particular course in advance . On the reading list to prepare us was one enjoyable lighter read ... "How to lie with statistics" and it is probably still in print today. Surprisingly useful in hindsight if for no other reason than it developed a quick awareness or recognition for BS 'backed' by stats.... It becmes fairly obvious once you recognise the whiff !
