+1, wish I had 'family' that doesn't mind getting its hair wet. |

Thanks. Was such a nice day for it. HISC is planning to open again from tomorrow until Monday for longer times. Fingers crossed for some more sea breeze.

Just had an email saying that Leigh and Lowton is opening for 'Individual and same household sailing' from tomorrow. Limited numbers at any one time controlled by a 'web collect' booking system but a move in the right direction.

Finally got my sad and sorry ass on the water last night, our new young vibrant club committee have basically gone totally insane, it's no longer Hythe and Saltwood, Sailing club the H & S now stands for Health and Safety. I fear this virus will have a disastrous effect on our lives going forward, the Hi Viz & jobsworths brigade gave been given a new charter to stand in judgement over us all. We had to have a winch training session, because it's had a service, has been fitted once again with imv dangerous wire rather than rope (not enough to reach the low water mark because it might exceed the winch ratings).
So by the time the damn session was over, the wind dropped, but a bunch of us went out to muck about, in my case to try a new sail and some bodges I've fitted in a pathetic attempt to control my plate, which is just as well because they failed. After this mind numbing period I just didn't realise, however bad the lack of wind conditions that prevailed were, the theraputic effect just being out there, free, has on one, it's just why I can cope with pretty much anything, but the caveat, what life would be like not being able to do it also gave rise to black thoughts in the absense of racing to engage the grey matter. Then the wind puffed up just a bit and the wire beckoned, only from the inboard steps but enough.. Thank God the bollox is nearly over, changing on the prom in front of an empty club who's toilets even are out of bounds seemed a bit surreal, but whatever, we're on the downslope and it was great to be back. |

I know that many will tell me that I am wrong in both law and duty.
But. I cannot see why volunteer clubs in particular have to shoulder such a duty of care as is often taken on, especially for adult sailors not undertaking training. To my mind a membership subscription only covers the cost of running the club, you are not buying a service, only access to facilities. Club: my interpretation, a group of like minded people banding together for mutual benefit. In this present time the Govt. has and is issuing rules and guidance. Why is it not enough to say, comply with the Govt rules and if not comfortable then do not attend or enhance your personal behaviour. |

Because we live in a litigious world where any accidents big or small, especially resulting in death - someone has to take the blame. Ambulance chasers are legendary these days. So clubs have to ensure that they provide a safe environment in which to go sailing. Especially if the water belongs to a 3rd party and safety boat facilities are normally provided by the club. It is not enough to say - go sailing at your own risk. Directors of the club can be liable..... Edited by Chris_H - 22 May 20 at 1:39pm |

Because we don't want to pass a nasty virus on to someone who might die from it? Its called caution.

Yes I absolutely agree Rupert with caution tied to personal responsibility , not passing the blame. If you see what I am saying.

I think I agree, but maybe see what many clubs are doing as a collective way of keeping members safe. So, signing up to sessions ensures that numbers are spread out. Limiting access means fewer things touched by many hands. Signage reminds members of how to keep safe.
Can this go too far? Undoubtedly. I suppose I'd rather things went a little too far than not far enough, but everyone's view on where those points are will be different, so in the end we have to abide by club committees making decisions on subjects upon which they, like us, arent experts. As the weeks go by, I hope things will relax without an increase in numbers catching the virus, so we can start playing properly again. |
