Would welcome suggestions and what other clubs have done regarding insufficient members to run racing ?
We could run without safety boat in clement weather, but don't think it's a good idea when we have younger members sailing. What could we do for sailing entertainment, when there is insufficient members to sail and run races?

Handicap racing? Pursuit with a beach start, fastest boat runs the start, trust everybody to be honest about their finishing position when the time is up (it's for fun so that should be enough incentive) mid fleet double hander with a whistle to sound the finish.
Boats of similar performance, run a gate start 3rd in the last race is pathfinder/gate boat. If it's not too windy one man can do line starts and safety for half a dozen or so boats. If the wind picks up have a second safety boat on the jetty with the nearest upright double hander detailed to abandon and man the extra boat.

Yes Handicap racing, though we have enough of certain types of boat to run class racing, just never happens.

Cool, so could one person run starts and safety most weeks leaving the others to race? That means three duties a season each same as most clubs.
Or do one race each on a Sunday in rotation so you get to sail two races some Sundays and three the others?

Some of the duties are done by people who don't sail or race much.

That's often the way and good as long as they are happy to do it and the 'serious' races shouldn't complain when they are asked to take up the slack
FWIW I'm happy to do my three duties despite only completing 9 main season races last year, OTOH I do much more races in during the winter series'. We have a similar situation at the holiday club so discussions like this can yield some useful ideas.
