I'm too light, too short, too old.
The Contender is too heavy, too long and too new to be destroyed on Hythe Beach.. Give me more reasons not to be stupid and buy one anyway. There's a Contender Open meeting this year at Hythe. Lot's of Contenders in the South East, quite a few local events, and this would be the fifth in my club. |

No just go for it . You will not be happy until you try one.
Also it provide hours of entertainment for the 6 of us that are left on here as we read about your ups and downs, the problems with the boat , problems with the class association, problems with the beach , fake news, the py of the boat, the py system, the weight of the boat ,other sailors in the class being younger and better, the rig of the boat , endless hissy fits and finally your decent into total madness 😂😀

Because you’d better suited to Musto .
Now you’re comfortable helm wiring a short responsive boat you’d boss it. Much as I inappropriately love my Contender at now 70kg & 5’ 3” with a senior railcard. Dealing with it for regular sea sailing would not be fun. Floats too high to reach board from in the water, when inverted impossible to pull up to windward especially if tide is running, do you really fancy learning the San Francisco roll? I was sailing mine one day in typical northern hill country gusting conditions and friend who has sail both reckoned I’d have had an easier time in Musto. Offiwind Musto with kite more stable. So if you’re really going full bore reckless....................? |

At least the contender class is big enough worldwide not to be affected by a short old man falling out of love with his inappropriate boat. But why not just buy a really long windsurfer?

If you want an all round boat to sail and beat your lasers on the water, forget it, in light winds like the Farr the Contender is not a great boat. To much boat in the water, to heavy and flat. You will also be moaning on here about the weight and you wont give it enough time to learn to race it before you get rid and call the boat a pack of crap. You will may well have recked it parking it on the shingle. Don't know how a Musto or 700 gets on in light wind but with your weight it might work. |

I've had a Musto, that's what started me off on this merry go round. There's also the lightskiff.de if I needed to be sensible. There were times I enjoyed the Musto and offwind it was never much of a problem, it was just the upwind in over 12knts stuff that gave me problems which I suspect will still be present.
It looks like the one I had my eye on has gone now anyway, rang them yesterday, I didn't really like the colour, it had insipid yellow foils and a yellow key line on the hull, totally wrong it would have been slow. Edited by iGRF - 28 Jan 20 at 4:45pm |

Didn’t grf start his sailing odyssey with a musto skiff ? Therefore it would bring some sort of synchronicity to his sailing life to finish back in one Seriously though , it’s better it he scratches his Contender itch now while he still can . You never know he might just love it and if he doesn’t at least the class will have a good second boat come onto the the market. Not that he will be able to sell it as having ‘ one careful owner ‘ Grf , you beat me to the post
