This is a really interesting article from the daily fascist. It struck a cord with me .I have recently taken early retirement and have realised that the sailing had become my main form of social contact other than my wife lol .
Made me realise two things. 1 how important the social side of any club is and 2 I had better get out more and meet more people, which I am doing by volunteering . It’s not something most of us think about when we are in our 20s and 30s

Perhaps contact the charities mentioned, sure to be local groups, put together a package, price of membership etc.
Cost comparison with other sports and pastimes, type of activities involved in running a sailing club. |

I read somewhere that men only bond through developing a common interest by working together in business/sport/volunteering. Women do not need that sort of common impetus. So yes, its a great idea to sell sailing as something to do to make friends to third age men. But we also have to develop a way to attract women and other age groups otherwise clubs will be even fuller of grumpy old gits (speaking as one.)

Lol Spot on , born 1962.
Laying it on a bit to be honest. Only semi retired really. Will be looking for a bit of part work next year, but after working for 40 years with out a break in employment. I felt I could treat myself to a gap year lol

Ha! I had those thoughts when I retired in May of last year. It seems that other people have successfully taken up almost every spare hour of my day. Far too busy to look for a job right now. Even seem to struggle to go sailing at the moment which is just ridiculous |

Spectator at another club again at the weekend and the dingy park had a good number of cats and performances skiffs. Last night a market place add popped up for an RS800, despite their 20years of existence I have never seen one sailing and this got be thinking. It was a cold day but still some boats racing about 10 Fireballs, 3 Solo, 3 FF and the old laser, feva and an Aero. So is participation about the fact that people are over ambitious about the boat they sail or can only be bothered to sail when conditions are perfect. Should the focus be on getting existing sailors our in more mainstream boats. |

In the 90s, when the new whizz bang 3000 asymmetric revolution was taking place, there was certainly a feeling that if you weren't with the programme you weren't a proper racing sailor.
I hoped that had gone pop along with the revolution. |
