Olympic champion number 2 in the world doesn't get to go to Japan
No other sport has such stupidity, there will be some useless club sailor from Madagascar there who doesn't even know how to tie a bowline but not him Come on world sailing sort this out imagine no Blake cos there was Bolt no Wawrinka cos there was Federer no 2nd Kenyan marathon runner etc |

Think you'll find there are only a few sports that allow more than one competitor per country in each event. |

I'm not sure the sports have a say, isn't it the Olympic Committee that allocates places?

Really? Can you name any individual sports that limit a country to a single entrant? All athletics events, boxing, tennis, table tennis, diving, swimming, gymnastics all allow multiple |

If we don't allow that "useless" person from Madagascar then there may be no Olympic sailing for anyone. One of sailing's biggest problems, as identified by the Olympic Programme Commission, is the lack of spread across all the continents. Africa is the biggest problem. If we had fewer Africans the sport will look even worse on a very important selection criteria. It's also not bad that Matthew Wearn finally got his chance.

Do we know that the club sailor from Madagascar is useless ? Perhaps we can ask Madagascars olympic committee if we can have his place ?

Boxing is max one per country per event, same as sailing. Same for Judo, Taekwondo, Weightlifting, Wrestling... But apart from that you're completely right...

The one athlete rule makes for a brutal selection process which will occasionally leave top guys left out, but that is what makes it so very special. The Olympics are about global participation, I love it when in the opening ceremony you see some little country with one or two athletes walking behind their flag. It is completely irrelevant if that particular sailor could be beaten by your average club sailor they are there representing their country and their experience is equally as valid as the medal hopefuls. And as any proper sailor knows the bowline is a stupid knot, it loads the rope up poorly weakening the rope dramatically It is not stable, it works ok with rough hemp rope but not good for modern slippy rope.

So on the same basis, the silver medalist has been treated unfairly? Cheated of his chance to win gold by someone else filling the spot?. Restricting numbers is essential and as noted spreads our Olympic contestants worldwide
